Hi Katrina
If your James married in Scotland, did he then stay here and perhaps die in Scotland? If so, his death may be worth following up as his parents names may be given - this is, if the death informant knew them.

How about the 1851 census - have you found him there? His place of birth my be given, though more often than not the place of birth may be stated as just "Ireland" whcih is always disappointing. However, his age (or the age he said he was...) should be given which may help a bit with an estimated date of birth.

His children's names may give clues to his parents' names too.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Katrina,

Like Lesley said, census records can sometimes show place in Ireland. I found him in 1851 (place of birth Ireland) and 1861 (place of birth Ayr ):?

I'm finding it really difficult to find him after that. Do you know when and where he died? Did he marry again after Margaret's death in 1861?

Regards,
Annette

Hi Katrina,

Probably a long shot but you never know!!!!!!!!!!!!

My husband's name is Moore and for the longest time I was stuck at his Grandfather's marraige. I knew his GGrandfather was a Walter Moore, but could find nothing. I also tried 'Muir'. Nothing, until I accidently input Mair instead of Muir. BINGO.

Might be worth a try!

Regards,

Christine.

HI,i did that and it brought nothing so i tried his son and it brought up moore, muir is the family name,i think moore was an error because his name is spelt moore on his sons wedding cert, but muir on his wife margaret's death cert.so confusing but will keep trying both.i am a desendent from that line and i am muir, but have seen many errors in census records so far.thank you i will try that one too.kind regards.katrina :)

Hi james did remarry an ayrshire woman and from that certificate i have found out his father was called Daniel muir , another headache as Daniel apparently hailed from Ireland , but i don't know where he married a jane park and his occupation was a weaver.
