Is this a possible ??

Post by willow » Sat Apr 05, 2008 12:17 pm

On my tree i have been able to get back to a marriage of James Gilfillan and Grizel or Grace Waygateshaw, they married in 02 May 1794 in Wiston and Roberton, and had 2 sons John b 12 Oct 1794 and James b 28 Mar 1797 both in Wiston and Roberton, on James and Graces marriage opr it gives no info on their parents.

I have found though a marriage for a James Gilfillan to a Mary Hastie in 23 DEC 1763 Wiston and Roberton, and they had

Thomas b 1769
William 1764
Jean 1766 all born Wiston and Roberton,

Could this possibly be my James' parents and siblings ?? This would also have been around the time my James was born too.

I really need help on this as this is my brick wall, and i would love to get further back, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sara

Hi Willow - How is your search progressing?

I found this on the IGI using the same batch number as the marriage for "your" couple. (They are the second ones shown).

This might suggest that the first one - Thomas - could be a brother of your James, as the surname is a bit unusual. It's worth a look anyway. I would also suggest that since there were no other marriages in the same Parish batch number (M116602) which covers 1691 to 1819, that the parents of James Gilfillan came from elsewhere. (Watch out for the different spellings of the name - they could differ between members of the same family).

International Genealogical Index / British Isles - 3
Select records to download - (50 maximum)
1. THOMAS GILFILLAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 04 MAY 1789 Wiston And Roberton, Lanark, Scotland
2. JAMES GILFILLAN - International Genealogical Index

3. JOHN GILFILLAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 07 JUL 1815 Wiston And Roberton, Lanark, Scotland

Your James could have been born from about 1772 back and not necessarily in the Wiston & Roberton Parish. Lanark (and much of the central area of Scotland, from Ayrshire up through Lanark and Falkirk) was an area where a lot of mining went on and the whole area was a magnet for people from Ireland. I'm not sure where you are located, and my apologies if you already know this. The info you found relating to a James Gilfillan and Mary Hastie could be relevant, because the appear to have a son Thomas, who would fit with the one mentioned above, who married in 1789.

I did a quick search, again in the IGI, and found:- James Gilfillan, Birth/Christening, 1755 - 1775, British Isles

1. JAMES GILFILLAN - Gender: Male Birth: 23 MAY 1755
2. JAMES GILFILLAN - Gender: Male Christening: 24 MAY 1755 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
3. JAMES GILFILLAN - Gender: Male Birth: About 1755 , Lanark, Scotland
4. JAMES GILFILLEN - Gender: Male Birth: 26 SEP 1756

6. JAMES GILFILLAN - Gender: Male Christening: 05 SEP 1756 Stirling, Stirling, Scotland
7. James Gilfillan - Gender: Male Birth: 12 NOV 1759 , Londonderry, Ireland
8. James Gilfillan - Gender: Male Birth: 29 NOV 1759 , Londonderry, Ireland
9. James Gilfillan - Gender: Male Birth: 29 NOV 1759 , Londonderry, Ireland
10. James Gilfillan - Gender: Male Birth: 10 SEP 1760 Of, Balfron, Stirling, Scotland

14. James GILFILLAN - Gender: Male Birth: About 1760 , Lanark, Scotland

16. JAMES GILFILLEN - Gender: Male Christening: 18 OCT 1761 Kirkurd, Peebles, Scotland
17. JAMES GILLFELLON - Gender: Male Christening: 18 OCT 1761 Newlands, Peebles, Scotland
18. JAMES GILFILLAN - Gender: Male Christening: 25 AUG 1763 Drymen, Stirling, Scotland
19. JAMES GILFILLAN - Gender: Male Christening: 22 MAR 1767 Stirling, Stirling, Scotland
20. JAMES GILFILLAN - Gender: Male Birth: 27 FEB 1770 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

With reference to the marriage you found for James Gilfillan and Mary Hastie, this marriage information seems to have been submitted by a member of the LDS rather than extracted from the registers for Wiston & Roberton. Therefore someone else has added this to the IGI information.

1. James Gilfillan - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 23 DEC 1763 Wiston &, Roberton, Lanark, Scotland
2. James Gilfillan - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 23 DEC 1763 Wiston &, Roberton, Lanark, Scotland

This probably has not been of much help to you, but bearing in mind what Lanarkshire is like and the industry and employment of the time, I'd keep an eye open for your family moving there from somewhere else. Some sections of the population were extremely mobile during the period and since there was no welfare state as such, they moved where the work was to be found.

It is a shame that James Gilfillan who married Grizel Waygateshaw probably didn't live long enough to be picked up in the 1841 Census. But it would be worthwhile checking on Scotland's People anyway. When I did a search in the 1841 Census for James Gilfillan and the name Grace, 4 entries came up.

Good luck with your search. Maybe someone else can think of a way forward for you.
