I've never been able to find any information about George Henry/Hendry my gt. gt. grandfather, born in Gorbals, Lanarkshire in 1832, but have now discovered he was discharged from the 92nd Foot Regiment in 1874. His destination address was given as Belfast.
Can anyone tell me how to go about searching for him in Belfast?

there's a George Henry listed at 28 Bedeque street in the 1880 street directory a book keeper that you can view on line at there's no charges to search on this site it's all down to the hard work of a lady called Mary .

My understanding is that most of the census data was destroyed...by accident. See http://www.exploregenealogy.co.uk/Irish ... cords.html

Plenty of national censuses have been conducted in Ireland. For any genealogist hoping to find records from the 19th century though, the tale is one of frustration. The first four Irish censuses (1821-1851) were largely destroyed by fire in 1922; all that survive are fragments. As if that wasn't pain enough, the government destroyed the returns from 1861-1891. That means you're completely out of luck for 19th century censuses.

Some bits and pieces seem to have survived and some earlier material.

The 1901 exists though.

I think the lack of census data ia one of the more frustrating aspects of Irish research. We are so used to being able to cross-check and confirm data between BMD and census records when dealing with our Scots relatives that we don't realise how spoilt and priviledged we are to have acess to all that info!!

Yes, I know what you mean. It was a long shot expecting to find him when the only information I have is from his army records when he stated his proposed new address would be Belfast.

I managed to trace other family members fairly easily through the Scottish records, but until recently I couldn't find information about my maternal grandmother. Jack, one of our very knowledgeable members, found her for me in New Jersey USA where she was born to a Scottish family. The family returned to Scotland when my grandmother was 11, which I presume was the first time she'd been to Scotland. I am very grateful to Jack for his research ability as I'm sure I'd never have found them without his help.
