WWII registration USA and Canada

Post by speleobat2 » Sun Apr 20, 2008 1:31 pm

I found a WWII registration card for a friend's relative and it reminded me that I have never been able to find one for my Dad. The friend's relative was 45 in 1942, my Dad would have been 27 in 1943.

Does anyone know: Were there two levels of registration for WWII--one for younger men, another for older men? I know my Dad was drafted in 1943. The friend's relative's registration card doesn't say "draft", just registration. Maybe this varied by state?

Also, Dad's sister married a Canadian who had come to Detroit to work in the auto factories. Did Canada have a draft for WWII? Or any military registration?

Speleobat2,

The following link from Ancestry explains what US WWII draft registrations are available:

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.asp ... 1002&enc=1

Basically it states that, due to privacy laws, only the 'Fourth Registration' (i.e. those men aged between 45 and 64 years on 27th April 1942) are currently available to the public. This would explain why you have not been able to locate your father's registration card. I would assume that whenever the require time has elapsed the other registrations will become publically available.

Its also interesting (unfortunate) to note that for some US states the information was destroyed and will therefore never become available.

Regards
Angela

Hi Carol:

You will find some information on obtaining Canadian military records:

Library and Archives Canada - Canadian Forces after 1918 (including Second World War)
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/gene ... 007-e.html Seems they have staffing problems, since they warn of extended delays.

There is also:
Veterans Affairs Canada
http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/general/sub.cf ... faq#obtain

The least bureaucratic may be:
Royal Canadian Legion
http://www.legion.ca

All the best,
Frances

Thanks Angela,

It just struck me as odd that this one registration should pop up on Ancestry, when none of the registrations for my relatives my Dad's age did. Now I know why!

Thanks Frances,

I'll have a look at the Canadian sites. My brother says that our uncle may have had a physical deferment-if that's what it was called- because he was under five feet tall.
