ALEXANDER ELDER 1830 JANET MOSSMAN

Post by conniejane » Sat May 03, 2008 10:18 am

hello. I am looking for descendents of Alexander Elder b 1830 shotts lanarkshire and Janet Mossman b about 1830 leith, midlothian. They lived in edinburgh and had about seven children inc. Alexander, James, Mary buchanan,Jessie or Janet and Rachel. On the 1901 census Alexander was a retired civil servant and only had two of these children still living at home. I would be so happy to find descendents of Alexander and janet. thank you

Hopefully this is a mistranscription. The street should be Upper Grove Place.

 Just another laugh from Ancestry.com! You should have seen his occupation in 1871: Deer Keeper Col Chequer
Deer Keeper in the middle of the city!

Had to go to 1881 to see what he really was  In 1861 he was a butler for a very posh gentleman in Charlotte Square who was, and I quote: Lord Ardmillan Of Ardmillan Givan Ayrshire Judge Of The Cort Of Session & Court Of Thote Mary In John

I had a look to see what this eminent gentelman's title was.

Lord Ardmillan of Ardmillan, Girvan, Ayrshire, Judge of the Court of Session & Court of Justiciary in Scotland.

Scotland was halfway into the next box, so was abbreviated to John.

He needed his 19 room house for himself, his wife, four daughters, butler, footman, cook, lady's maid, housemaid, and kitchen maid.

All the best,

AndrewP

 Rule No 1 in genealogy transcriptions: When in doubt, abbreviate to John!

But that doesn't explain Justiciary >> Thote Mary  (although it does explain the last bit by Rule No 2, which is the flip side to Rule No 1: When in doubt, abbreviate to Mary!

thanks for all that info. i like the thought of a butler, and even a deerkeeper who was really a doorkeeper! any idea what the col chequer was? I know so little about this family, who are my grandpas family, that every little detail helps to build up a picture of them. thank you so much. jane
