Hi Eileen,
Is this David the shoemaker? See the Ancestry transcriptions below. If these look to be likely candidates, then it is worth seeing the original documents on SP for 1851 to 1871. 1881 transcriptions on SP or LDS CDs.
1851

David Paterson 44, Shoemaker, born Alton [presumably Alloa]
Janet Paterson 40, born Alton [presumably Alloa]
James Paterson 9, born Alton [presumably Alloa]

Margaret Paterson 8 Mo, born Alton [presumably Alloa]
1861
New Row, Alloa, Clackmannanshire
David Paterson 43, Shoemaker, born Alloa
Janet Paterson 55, born Tullibody
James Paterson 19, Miller, born Tullibody
Margaret Paterson 11, born Tullibody
1871
26 Main Street, Alloa, Clackmannanshire
David Paterson 57, Shoemaker, born Clackmannan
Janet Paterson 60, born Alloa
David Paterson 7, grandson, born Lonton, Peebles-shire [presumably Linton]
1881
Linnmill, Clackmannan
David Paterson 71, General Labourer, born Clackre [presumably Clackmannan]
Janet Paterson 69, born Carnock, Fife
David Sharp 5, grandson, born Clackre [presumably Clackmannan]
The 1881 entry is a bit more sceptical, but may be worth looking at.
All the best,
AndrewP
