Thomson - Hamilton /Dumfrieshrire Area

Post by catlady462 » Fri May 30, 2008 12:17 am

Anyone following either of these families?
Alexander Hamilton b.1791 Dumfrieshire, mrd Jannet Thomson b abt 1801 ( can't locate a marriage on Scotlands People OPR). Didn't find births for them either, at least that I could see. There daughter Mary marries into my family.

I found the Hamiltons on the 1841 in Dunscore, a few houses away is the family of Joseph Thomson and his wife Margaret. I guess I'm hoping that this is the connection I'm looking for for Janet Thomson.

The Hamiltons first child is born 1821 ( per the census), besides Mary, there children were Robert, Alexander, James and Thomas.

I have the marriage of Mary Hamilton to Thomas McMeekan Dec 1857
taking place at Keir Free Church. ( Is this near Caerlaverock?)
her father is listed as Alexander Hamilton, Stone Dyke Builder, deceased.

Everyone is so helpful at Talking Scot, I just had to ask for any help or suggestions on where to go next to try and place these Thomson and
Hamilton families.

Warmest Regards
Ruth

Hi Ruth,

Kier parish was 12-15 miles N to NW of Dumfries. Caerlaverock parish was 5-8 miles S to SE of Dumfries, so they are about 20 miles apart.

All the best,

Hi Ruth,
I suspect this is the family you are looking for:
Alexander Hamilton b 4/1/1784 in Closeburn to Thomas Hamilton & Isabald Kirkpatrick. He probably died before 1855. No marriage record to Jannet Thomson. No birth record for her, but she died 24/3/1867 aged 77, so born in 1790 to John Thomson & Mary McDougall. They had 5 children I know of, Mary being the 4th, born 14/9/1828. They moved to Bush, Dunscore but they, or their sons, moved back to the Closeburn/Morton area. Thomas was a stone dyker, Alexander a grain merchant, James a miller.
Hope this is helpful.
