Hugh Campbell 1787 vs. 1792

Hello -

I am fresh from reviewing new information from the IGI and SP. Confusion is growing!

I found in Stevenston, Ayr, 2 Hugh Campbells - one born in 1787, one in 1792. Both have father John Campbell. One has mother Isabel Boyd, the other a Girzel Boyd. Although IGI indicates the two Boyd women are separate entities who married 2 separate John Campbells, I have my doubts.

First, both Johns are "roop makers" in the same town. I find that a stretch, unless one is the son of the other, which does not seem to be the case.

Second, Girzel could be a garbled version of Isabel.

I am wondering if indeed these are 2 different families, or if perhaps Hugh 1787 died and was replaced by Hugh 1792?

John and Isabel had other children: Agnes, Thomas, William, John, and Boyd. John and Girzel apparently only had one - Hugh 1792.

I could find no marriage records for either John and wife on SP.

Any thoughts are welcome!

The name probably should be Grizel, but upon looking at the OPR page Girzel is certainly what is written there. Grizel is normally a variation of Grace.

As for the Roop Maker, I suggest it may be Roap Maker (Rope Maker). Even by magnifying the text, I could arguably be either Roop or Roap.

As there are no other roop makers on either page the implication was that roop making was not a major industry in Stevenston, so my guess is that this one John Campbell and that he was the father to both Hugh Campbell sons, but that he was playing away from home when he fathered the one with Girzel, or that the information written in the OPR is wrong and Girzel should have been Isobel (Had the session clerk been on the cooking sherry? ). Or had Isobel died and John moved in with (and married?) her sister? Possibly the first Hugh had died and his name was used again for the next son born - that was quite common practice. Both Hughs were christened in Saltcoats within the parish of Stevenston.

I am assuming that the Irvine-born two belong to the same family group as the Stevenston-born lot.

On the online IGI, there are three LDS submissions for potential marriage dates for this couple - 04-Mar-1767 Irvine, 04-Mar-1768 Irvine and about-1772 Stevenston. My inclination would be that one of the first two is more likely than the third one, but without any supporting documents it is without proof (guessing?).
