Does anyone know where I can find a map of Clydebank which contains the "Holy City" which was largely destroyed in the Blitz? Several of my ancestors lived in the area before the war.
Regards
Sam

Hi Sam, this website talks about Radnor Park, and the Holy City. There is no map, but doers mention some of the streets which gives you a clue when looking at a regular map. There are some good photos of the blitzed Holy City.

I don't know if you'll find what you are looking for but you could check out Glasgow City Council's website on The Clydebank Blitz. They have links to a couple of maps showing damage locations but I don't know if your area is there.

Annette

Oh I am sure it would be as this was one of the most damaged areas in Clydebank. Adjacent to Singers which was manufacturing munitions & near enough to Browns(Shipyard) & the docks which were all a prime target.
There is a Roll of Honour on the Clydebank Story site which Nelmit mentioned. It gives most of the names of those that perished in the Blitz.
If any of your rellies were still there at the time they would have been evacuated along with almost the entire inhabitants of Clydebank.
Both my parents were children then & all evacuated although my paternal Grandfather a Boer &WW1 veteran wanted to say to fight the Hun in case they landed by parachute! He was very reluctantly forced to Penicuik as his health was not great due to war injuries.
My Mother has a wealth of tales to tell of the time.I would be happy to share with anybody who is interested.

Great photo. It looks so rural which I suppose it was once upon a time.
You can just see Singers at the far left of the photo. It looks like they were in the middle of construction work when the photo was taken-do you know the date?

Hi Joe didn't notice it was your first post! Welcome to
.
The area is now so built up you would have difficulty recognising it.

It has been a long while since I have read or even posted!
Sam and I have the same "Cooper" relatives. My Mom was from Clydebank and they lost their home on Radnor St. Mom was a Trainor and her father Robert worked for John Browns on the Queen Mary...he died before she was launched. I only have a few stories about the Blitz...just bits and pieces. The windows in their home were blown out the first night. The second night my Mom fussed about her fur coat her father gave her so my Grandmother, Catherine or known as Kitty, went back from the shelter to get it and a blanket for the youngest, my Aunt Cathy. She also said they ended up staying with the butcher family for awhile, think the name was Tough. Later heard a Mrs. Tough (and hope I am spelling it right) still attened Mom's old church...Kilbowie St. Andrew's Parish Church in Clydebank (as of 2003 anyway).
I have the Clydebank Blitz book and have even seen our relatives name (the only one that died during the Blitz) in the book at Edinburgh Castle...Isabella McLean Cooper.
But would love to know more stories!

Hi Karen, my wife Ann Torley, lived on M'Ghee St just up the hill from Radnor St. Their house was only slightly damaged, windows out, ceilings collapsed, fire in the attic etc. Her brother still lives there. The family had to split up since their underground air raid shelter was flooded, Ann and her sister spent the night in an aunts shelter, just around the corner. Two houses in the street had a direct hit and both families perished.Ann's hair turned white, and her sisters hair fell out due to the shock. In those days there was no counselling.
Ann remembers the Tough family, who also lived on M"Ghee St. Do you remember their motto in the butcher shop? "If it's Tough's it's Tender"
