Hello David,

WW2 Service Records are still held by the Ministry of Defence.

This page and those linked to it should contain the information you’re after.

Hi Alan,I've been trawling the site, but i still cannot find what i need.I would love just be able to type in a name or service number and and a service history would appear before my very eyes. But then genealogy would be too simple,Slainte,David

That would be very nice David.

According to this old NA information page:
http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.go ... ry_Records
“Personnel records are received (by the Army Record Office) eight years after discharge and are held for at least 75 years after discharge before being passed to The National Archives.”

I guess that means 2020 at the earliest for soldiers demobbed after WW2, that’s another 12 years and could be a fair bit longer before it’s all online. Until then I suppose it will be the old fashioned way and the information will only be seen by families who apply. The difficulty for genealogists, and probably for MOD, is the 75 year rule. Those WW2 files on miles of shelf space are probably about as useless to MOD as a .303 and have been for quite some time.

The Australian situation is interesting. All WW1 service records are freely available online at the Australian National Archives site. WW2 records are also held by ANA. For A$16.50 (UKP8) the WW2 record will be scanned in colour and put on line. For A$25 (UKP12) you get a colour copy posted to you and the record put on line. If you don’t want the record put online then for A$25 all you get is a black and white photocopy and you have to do the application by telephone or some other obsolescent means. Once a record goes on line it is available free to everyone. http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/explor ... -wwii.aspx

All the best,
Alan
