IGI Records vs Scotlandspeople records - James Cochran(e)

Post by StuartC » Sun Jun 15, 2008 12:27 pm

I am hving difficulty in reconciling records from the IGI and Scotlandspeople with respect to a James Cochran(e) born in Ayrshire around 1796 - 1800.

The IGI recods give the folowing:
Date and Place of Birth: About 1796, Patna, Straiton, Ayr, Scotland
Date of marriage: October 1828 (Janet Paton, also see as Patan)
Date and Place of Death: August 1839, St Quivox, Ayr, Scotland

In searching the Scotlandspeople records I cannot find a James Cochran(e) born abt 1796 in Patna or Straiton. The closest date I can establish is a James Cochran born 8 Mar 1800 at St Quivox, Ayr. Parents being a John Cochrane and a Margaret Allason (also see as Allison).

As the crow flies Patna, St Quivox and Straiton are all very close and may have been part of the same parish at that time !?

With death records only starting in 1855 and his death beforethe 1841 census establishing the correct record for his birth is difficult.

Also the spelling variation of Cochran(e) complicates the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas how to establish the correct birth date and place?
Regards

Hi Stuart
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

With regard to the record you have found on the IGI, is it a submission rather than an extract? The IGI is a collection of information from a variety of sources, including submissions by other family researchers, so what you may have found is someone else's best estimate, not something which is actually recorded somewhere.

In the past, spelling varied a great deal - as long it the name sounded the same or similar, it did not really matter, so you need to keep an open mind on spelling issues.
As the crow flies Patna, St Quivox and Straiton are all very close and may have been part of the same parish at that time !?
St Quivox and Straiton are separate parishes. For more info on OPR records for each, see
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/f ... 6to620.pdf
Patna is a village in the parish of Straiton.

If you know the names of all James's children, there may be clues there as to his parentage. See "Scottish Naming Patterns" in the "Talking Scot Library" section:

Best wishes

Hi Lesley B,

Thanks for the response. The IGI Record is a submitted one. However the Marriage dates on the same page match those in Scotlandspeople.

I have the childrens birth records and names for James Cochrane and Janet Paton, however they seem to be reversed from the normal naming pattern.

I also have the birth record for James Cochran b Mar 1800 in St Quivox
to a John Cochran and Margaret Allason, and indicates that he had three surving siblings (John 1805 St Quivox, Anne b 1807 and Jean b 1811 both Barony, Lanark).

Anne's OPR shows her to be the 4th Child, and Jean's shows her to be the 6th Child. Reading between the lines looks like there were two other children that did not survive.
