Mysterious Rodger's Again!

Post by darylrodger » Sat Jul 05, 2008 7:55 pm

Hi,

I have some ancestors of my hubby's that I can't seem to find at all. I'm mystified why they just don't want to be found, can anyone help ? :?

They are;

William Rodger
b. 29th Apr 1875
m. 13th July 1899 to Margaret Cameron

James Rodger
b. 25th Feb 1879
m. 13th Apr 1906 to Anne Gilchrist

James Rodger
b. 1st Dec 1914

John Rodger
b. 26th Aug 1884

They're all brothers of my hubby's grandfather Robert b. 1st Dec 1890.

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

Some questions for you.

(1) Were the brothers really born across a 39 year span, or is 1914 a mistake? (another James?)

(2) Where did the births and marriages take place?

(3) Have you found them on the censuses of 1881, 1891 and/or 1901?

(4) Is it their deaths you are seeking?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew,

Sorry about the duplicate posting, my mistake.

James who born in 1914 was the son of another brother called Mason Rodger. They were all born in Hutchestown, Glasgow, and I think that they also married there too, although I can't be 100%.

I've tried the 1901 census but can't seem to locate them. I would like to find William & Margaret's children, and his death, also James & Annie's children and his death too. If I could find James (b. 1914) & John's marriages, children and their death's that would be great.

Hi Daryl,

The one to search for is the one with the least common name and you wil find the family in the Gorbals (Govan parish, Govanhill ward of Glasgow). There is only one Mason Rodger in Scotland in the 1901 census, so he is easily found on ScotlandsPeople. He is there with both parents and three of his brothers, matching tha names and ages you have given.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Daryl

My husband's gt grandmother was Annie Rodgers her father was Patrick Rodgers and mother Annie Grandinson. She was married in 1904 age 21 which would make her born c 1883 - did your Rodgers have a sister?
Her address on the marriage cert is 151 Naburn St, Gorbals.

Hi Andrew,

I've found out some more details regarding the Rodger's today. :o

The reason why I couldn't find William, James, & the other James is because they moved or emigrated to Canada!

James & Annie moved to Darlington after their marriage then to Edinburgh later on. They had 2 children, a son and a daughter.

Mason's son James emigrated to Canada, and John apparently stayed in Glasgow and had 2 sons, John, James & a daughter May.

Regards,

Daryl

Daryl,

When going further back, bear in mind that the name Rodger can be spelt umpteen different ways. There is Roger, Rogers, Rodger and Rodgers for starters, but there are also variants such as Rogie and Rodgie, based on how the name was actually pronounced up in Perthshire. My lot come from the parish of Little Dunkeld in Perthshire, and I've come across all these variants and more! :)
