Is there anyone who has knowledge of the RODDICK in Kirkmahoe area
or has access to MI's or BDMs for there
I am GG Grandaughter of ROBERT RODDICK c1787-1870 He was a Butler
to Lt Col James Hervey at Castle Semple from at least 1834
documented on his daughters marriage till 1851 on Census
He died in Glasgow Aug 1860 at his son Samuel William Roddick's
home in McNeil St and is buried in the Southern Necropolis
he states in Census born Kirkmahoe Dumfries on his death cert his
father is JOHN RODDICK Land Factor mothers name is not noted other
than Mrs Roddick He was married to MARY MCGREGOR in Edinburgh where she and all the children were born according to census
On his Marriage document in Edinburgh 1807 he states his Father is
JOHN RODDICK Gentlemans Servant but no mention of where
However the one person that I find that is possibly his parents but only going on the Kirkmahoe birth of Elspeth and the gentlemans servant bit I
can find nothing more on Elspeth Roddick so no guarante this is the correct parents there was....
ie Roddick, John, gentleman's servant, Old Kirk p., and Elspeth,
Old Grayfrier's p., d. of deceased ... Sinclair, farmer at Douglas 17
Nov 1781
I have no way of knowing if he is the correct father of Robert
the only birth I can find for this couple is a PHILLIS RODDICK born
at Kirkmahoe in 1799
I have all of Roberts children b Edinburgh 8 there may
be more as not all have any birth recorded and have been found via
marriage and census records
I have got all I can find sofar from Scotland's People but feel there must
be more records out there I cant get to LDS as I live South of
Hobart Tasmania and am really remote
any help at all is very welcome
regards to all

Hello Lesley,
It looks like the Dumfries & Galloway Family History Society has a publication with what looks to be an index of Death OPRs for Kirkmahoe (1729 - 1748 and 1800 - 1818). They seem to be the only existing years for Kirkmahoe.
http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/dgfhs/pubs/pubs-ndx.htm
The name Roddick appears on their “Members Interests” list
An old thread on the Monumental Inscription matter http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/t ... 1041500290
The only Kirkmahoe material in the LDS Catalogue appears to be
Microfilm of original records (Books OPR 835 ; vols. 1-3.)
Baptisms, 1720-1854; Marriages, 1725-1763, 1817; Burials, 1729-1747, 1800-1818.
and
Old parochial registers : deaths and burials index : Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire 1729-1748, 1800-1818 Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society
Some interesting stuff here about Kirkmahoe http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/unit_ ... d=10126125
Hope there’s something useful there.

Reading your post I noticed that he worked for the Harvey's at Castle Semple. This is in the village of Lochwinnoch, where I come from. There is a street calley Harvey Terrace and the War Memorial is in Harvey Square. Here's a link to the village web site. You'll find links to lots of local information and also photographs of the area. It's worth having a look.

The Harveys and the McDowalls were big in the locality.

Thanks for the links as it is good to read about where the old ancestors have been...
I have downloaded the list of the R*D*K BDMs in Dumfries and am seeing if I can make any sense from that
I got a good web site from the Dumfries list http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/default.aspx
that has some old Historical indexes that has given me some more clues
Date: 30 August 1822
Name: HETHERINGTON , John
Trade:
Place:
Topic: admitted his guilt with Phillis Roddick and that he was the father of her child; paid one guinea to the poor
Notes: fornication
Archive Ref: CH2/537/12
Page(s): 15
then I found her and child on the census with her sister and got their death certs
I am finding all on this line bar the elusive whether the same parents for ROBERT RODDICK/ RIDDICK b Kirkmahoe c 1787 it does look like they will be the parents as the parents of the others were JOHN RODDICK Farm manager & ELSPETH /EUPHEMIA SINCLAIR m1781 in Edinburgh and children all b Kirkmahoe
But whether a Land Factor as per Robert's father on his death cert and a Farm Foreman as per death certs of others are the same I don't really know and the informants said this ... he was a Gentleman's servant when he married Elspeth...could all be the same ??
The parents married 1781
I have found BEATRICE, b 1790 MARGARET, b 1791 EUPHEMIA,b 1796 & PHILLIS, b 1799 all b Kirkmahoe
I am thinking there must be others still to find as years missing
I will check if any births in Edinburgh on SP now
regards lesley
