pre-1855 Glasgow death records
Hi again: I have narrowed down when one my guys must have died so thought if anyone had access to this area they might look for him. John Duncan born circa 1802 died after 1851 census but before 1855. John was a sawmill labourer, born in Partick. He was husband to Agnes Mclaughlin, father to - Margaret, Christina, Elizabeth, James, Edward, John (x2), William and Agnes and possibly a Daniel( although I have never found proof of this). I wonder when he found time to work? His wife was a trooper as she lived until 1889!! Thanking anyone in advance..Donna

If you're lucky, his death might be recorded in the Old Parish Records. The OPR deaths aren't online, but you can order the microfilms through your local LDS church. You check the library catalog for the parish (at www.familysearch.org) your relative died in, and view the microfilm at your local LDS church. Costs about $6 to order the microfilm, and you can view it at your leisure. It's pretty tedious searching without an exact death date and place though, especially in Glasgow. And the old handwriting can be tough on the eyes.
Or maybe someone knows if the poor law applications existed at that time? If his widow applied for poor relief, they would have recorded the death of her husband. I once got a date of death from those when I couldn't find it anywhere else, not even on SP Statutory indexes.

Hi there
I'm by no means expert on the Mitchell Library (where are you Jack?) but from looking at their web pages about Poor Law archives:-
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ ... chives.htm
Poor Law Archives
The Mitchell holds Poor Law records for:-
Glasgow, 1851-1948
Barony, 1861-1898 (when it united with Glasgow)
Govan, 1876-1930 (when it united with Glasgow)
Former county councils of Bute, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire. Many of these applications date back to the beginning of the new poor law in 1845
The question we need answered is did Partick fall into Glasgow or the Barony?? I hope that someone with more knowledge than I have of this will be able to help you.
Liz

They are indeed all in the same database Lesley.LesleyB wrote:Hi LizFrom the point of view of looking up the index on the PCs at the Mitchell, you don't need to know that! All the Glasgow applications are, I think, in the same database. The question we need answered is did Partick fall into Glasgow or the Barony??
Best wishes
