alexander macleods father

Post by utrecht003 » Wed Jul 16, 2008 8:42 pm

It's getting serious now, trying to find my great grandfather
My grandfather was born illigitimate 25 May 1868 in Muckairn Argyll his mother was Kitty Macleod;Present at birth grandmother mary macleod.
On Alexanders Marriage Cert.28 April1893 Glasgow his Father was given as Malcolm Macleod and his Mother as Catherine MackenziePreviously Macleod MS Macleod
On his death Cert. His Father was Malcolm Macleod and his Mother Catherine Macleod Subsequently McKenzie MS. Macleod. Catherines Death cert. is Catherine Mckenzie widow of William Mckenzie (merchant seaman) Her Mother was Mary Macleod MC. Lamont
Every thing ties in. Mary was born in Oban. Ive looked for Parish records for Muckairn for 1868 but they seem to be lost.
Can anybody advise me if there is anywhere else I can look or (hopefully recognise the family) or is it a case of thats it, I'm afraid.

Hi Utrecht003,

From the NAS online catalog I see the surviving Kirk Session records for Muckairn are as follows.
  • CH2/379 Muckairn Kirk Session 1775-1925

    Reference Title Date Access status
    CH2/379/1 Minutes 1833-1862
    CH2/379/2 Minutes 1870-1923
CH2/379/3 Poor's accounts and kirk session minutes re financial matters 1829-1850
    CH2/379/4 Baptisms 1795-1821
    CH2/379/5 Births 1775-1826
    CH2/379/6 Marriages 1886-1893
    CH2/379/7 Marriages 1785-1813
    CH2/379/8 Communion roll 1888-1927
    CH2/379/9 Heritors' minutes 1861-1869
As you state the minutes seem to be missing for the period around 1868. I would be tempted to have a look at the Heritors' minutes 1861-1869, as date-wise they almost fit the period of years missing from the other minutes. Could they be these minutes under another name?

The only way to find out is to take a trip to NAS in General Register House, Edinburgh.

All the best,

AndrewP
