Great grand aunt & uncle's in Aberdeenshire 1881 census

Post by moresmall » Fri Aug 08, 2008 10:46 am

Can some one see if they can find my great grand aunts & uncles in Aberdeenshire (coould be in Aberdour census) in 1881, or even later ones.

They are :

Christian Brown Buchan, born 1 November 1851, Aberdour
Jane Buchan, born 7 November 1853, Aberdour
George Alexander Buchan, born 14 April 1856, Aberdour
Eleanor Milne Buchan, born 15 October 1858, Aberdour
Margaret Ironside Buchan, born 1 November 1861, Aberdour.

The eldest of the above children was Mary Stewart Buchan, my gt grandmother, their parents being George Alexander Buchan & Rachel Grant.

Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to help

Regards

Maureen

Hi Maureen,

I can't help with the census but did you know they are all buried in Aberdour kirkyard stone no 346. If you haven't got them already have a look on http://www.abdnet.co.uk/mi-index/
Unfortunately I don't have the Aberdour booklet to tell you exactly what the gravestone says but maybe someone else has got it.

Great grand aunt & uncle's in Aberdeenshire 1881 census

Hi Paula

Thanks for that information, no I didnt know they were buried there.

Hadnt been able to track them down, and thought some of them maybe had died in child hood, but its sad to know that 4 of the 6 died early.

That just leaves me with Eleanor to find out about. I believe she died in Aberdeen City, would like to find out who she married, and if there are any children.

Thanks

Maureen

Hi Paula

Just noticed you have Barclay in your list of names.

I have an Alexander Barclay born 1844 in Alvah in Banffshire, died 1921, he married Ann Forbes 1847-1916, she was also from Banffshire.

Did your Barclays come from that area ??

Hi moresmall
The 1881 census is available to search online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - not sure if you have tried search already or where you have looked?

Also, some local libraries in Scotland have the complete set of CD ROMS for 1881, or the library may have a subscription to Ancestry which would also let you search the census data.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Maureen,

My Barclays come from Crimond, Longside, Old/New Deer & Peterhead.
Haven't found any that ventured that far northwest (it must be at least 15 miles from Peterhead !). However Alexander is a common Barclay name so you never know. Will bear you in mind if I do find a connection.

Maureen,

Here's some of the census information. Maybe someone else can come up with the rest.

1861

Rachel Buchan 36
B. about 1825 Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire
Reg. Dis. Aberlour
Address: 71 School St.
Farmservant Wife

Christian B. Buchan 9
Elador M Buchan 2
George Buchan 5
Jane Buchan 7
Mary S Buchan 11

1871

Rachel Buchan 41
B. about 1830 Fraserburgh
Reg. Dis. Aberlour
Address: Lane House
Farm servant wife

Eleanor M Buchan 12
Margaret Jankinn 4 Shown as daughter, but I think she is really a granddaughter

1881

Rachel Buchan 51
Aberdour
Wife
No 55 High Street Lane

Eleann Buchan 22

I printed out Eleanor's census record so I don't have Rachel's occupation for this one handy. Don't worry about differences in spelling. Mostly they are transcription errors. Looks like Rachel's husband George was off in the fields whenever the census taker showed up!

Out of time again!

Carol :D
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Hi

If you want someone to look at the stone, I'll try to do it some day when I'm up in Fraserburgh. Going on holiday soon but will be back before the nights drawing in make in impracticable.
