Hi all,
I am new here, so I hope this is the correct area for this inquiry.
I am searching for any history on the Boydston regions of Ayrshire, Scotland (Boydston Shore, Boydston Braes, Boydston Farm, and High Boydstone). Specifically I am looking for the earliest historical references to these places by those names (or some variation thereof, such as Boyd Stone, etc.).
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am not havin much luck thus far. ;-/
Boydston(e), Ayrshire info?

The earliest map that mentions the name is John Thomson's Atlas of Scotland, 1832
http://www.nls.uk/maps/atlas/thomson/547.html
chose the top right portion and zoom in about a third of the way up on the left hand side
BOYEDSTONE is mentioned just above the I of CRAIGIE.
Perhaps others wizards can find something earlier?

Hello Ryan,
This 1826 Google Book “Cases Decided in the Court of session” seems to be saying that the Proprietor of the lands of Boydstone in 1649 was a Lord Boyd.

But whether the place was named after his family (Boyds Town?) or the other way around is the question. There seems to be some discussion about it here and probably elsewhere. http://www.geocities.com/janet_ariciu/Boydfamily.html
Hope that’s useful,
Alan

I've had a look at each of the older maps of that area on the NLS website. I agree with Wilma that the Thomson map is the earliest one that shows Boyedstone. However it may well be that the place name is much older as Alan found reference to. The Thomson map is the first one at the level of detail to show place names of many houses and farms.WilmaM wrote:The earliest map that mentions the name is John Thomson's Atlas of Scotland, 1832
