Irish Parochial Records & ordering from LDS centres

Post by LesleyB » Tue Aug 12, 2008 7:19 pm

Hi all
Just a wee thought for anyone struggling away with their Irish branches:

If you know which parish the families you are looking for came from, it may be possible to order microfilms of the appropiate Parochial Registers from your nearest LDS centre.

1. Check their library catalogue first to see what exists for your chosen parish:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... t_fhlc.asp
2. Locate your nearest LDS centre:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp
3. Order films in, pay required fee (last time I ordered a couple of years back it was about £2.75 per film I think, its probably a bit more now...will find out shortly and report back when I've ordered my Irish films!).

Hope this is of some help to those working on Irish connections. (I very much hope it is "do-able" too; in theory it should be, but again, I'll report back if it proves impossible...Irish research seems to seldom be straightforward, so it's probably safer to expect the unexpected  )

Best wishes
Lesley

Ive been extremely lucky recently with my Irish side and searching the site it looks like they do have what i need for just one of mine. And, this maybe the push i need to finally pluck up the courage to go to the Kensington branch as the building looks quite a daunting place and has always put me off going in.

Thanks Lesley

Hi Tracey
..the building looks quite a daunting place and has always put me off going in.
Awww, go on... (she said in her best "Father Ted" voice) ...my local branch of LDS have always been helpful and polite, but they do not hassle you if you know what it is you want to see and you just want to get on with your own stuff.

At the same time they seem to give a great deal of support and hand-holding to those who need it with their family research. I think they provide a great service, especially considering that they are equally happy to help you even if you are not a member of the church.

Best of luck with it Tracey!

Quick update:
Just ordered two microfilms by phone. No apparent problems with them being Irish films or anything... cost will be £2.70 per film. So no apparent inflation either. :D \:D/

Best wishes

Tracey go in I am there all the time & the majority of folk there are not LDS. I occasionally see a fellow member but that's a rare occurance.
I have heaved my way through many of the aforesaid Irish Records-I have no idea of Parish but am always hoping to get lucky!
The facilities are good & quite extensive records there.Lots of Scottish ones-I have loads on permanent loan. They even have a room for you to take a break & eat a packed lunch.
Do you still want that look-up at the Mitchell? I will PM you about Sandford House.
