Mitchells of Banchory Ternan.....
Hi All!
I haven't posted for a few months since I thanked you for finding one of my elusive Crathie Mitchell ancestors in the 1881 census. Sadly the elusive Charles Mitchell disappeared again and is nowhere to be found since!
In the meantime I have traced the family of my g.g.g. grandfather William's brother Farquharson Mitchell born Crathie 1821. He married Mary Forbes from Strachan and had two children Peter Mitchell born 1845 and George Mitchell born 1848 in Kincardine O'Neil. Farquharson later worked as an ironmonger in Aberdeen and died in 1869. I don't know what happened George but Pter married Margaret McLean (daughter of Elie (nee Duguid) and John McLean, Superintendent of Harbour Waters. They had four sons, John (1881), Alfred Forbes (1883), Walter Farquharson (1885) and Douglas E. (born c. 1891). by 1891 the family were in Banchory Ternan where they lived at 20 Hight St and Peter was a general merchant. Peter died by accidental drowning between 3 and 4 am on an October night in 1899. Margaret and the four boys are still in Banchory Ternan in 1901 where she is running the shop and John is 20 and working in the harbour office, Alfred is a grocer's assistant and Walter a chemist's apprentice. Douglas is still only 10 and in school. since then absolutely nothing. No deaths, marriages or births. John is difficult to look for as the name is so common but the other names are not so common and I can find nothing. Local Banchory Ternan contacts in Stonehaven Genealogy have been unable to locate graves or any mention of this family. Does anyone have any ideas? Sorry to be so long-winded but if I don't tell all I know some kind soul may take the time to look up what I already have.
Great site by the way and keep up the good work - even if you can shed no light on this brick wall!
Regards,
Tish

Thanks Jean and Davie,
Jean I will check that death record - can't do it on this machine, I have to wait until I get home! I know I found one death record with both names but it was a Mitchell woman married to a McLean man. I can't remember if it's the one you mention. Davie, I have looked for marriages for Margaret but nothing doing there either.
Thanks again,
Tish

Hi Jean,
I've double checked and that McLean Mitchell death you referred to is the one I already found and sadly she is not the one I'm looking for. Still lost!

Tish

Banchory Ternan
Trish
Have you tried a email to the Banchory records office
banchory.registrar@aberdeenshire.gov.uk
They have Births 1900 -1967 Deaths/Marriages 1940-1967 and more important burials from 1898 for Banchory Ternan.
It's a pity my son's MIT was an assitant Registrar in this office until a few years ago.

Hi Drew,
I didn't realise you could do that! I thought records were only available from scotlandspeople and that they were confidential otherwise. Thanks,
Tish

Trish
You are right regarding confidentiality but providing you have proof of relationship you can get a copy from local registrar.
I have an "Aunt" who was not a relation but because my father was the informant and I was able to give her history they gave me an extract of her death and would have given me her birth also if needed.
It really depends on the willingness of those in the office but as you will see elsewhere in the posts most are very helpful, never found a "<i>jobs worth</i>" yet.
On a different subject how good are you with Irish Research? - I have a few minefield over there to resolve.

Drew,
thanks for that. Will have a bash.
As to Irish research it's very difficult by comparison with the situation in Scotland. Records are not available on-line as you know and you need to know which parish people were born, married, died in etc. However let me know what brick walls you have and I can try. I'm based in the West of Ireland but have contacts around the country - not genealogists just people who might do a favour.

Tish

Charles O'Donnell Catherine Rush
Trish
I have Charles and Catherine O'Donnell ms Rush who's daughters Jane (born abt 1835) Bridget and Catherine(born abt 1856) all came to Scotland.
I have a suspicion that Catherine may have been married before coming to Scotland and her husband died or both came together and he died here but as she was using her maiden name again cannot confirm this. Verbal family history said they came from Donegal but I was told that Rush was unlikely to be a Donegal surname.
any help would be appreciated
