Hi Jack and welcome
We can't help with living people on the public forum, but maybe we can fill in some of the gaps for you. You don't say where the family was living, but this looks like them in 1891:
4 Broomloan Rd, Govan, Lanarkshire
John Hunt, 33, Head, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Labourer in Shipyard
Mary Hunt, 33, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
John Hunt, 12, Son, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Elizabeth Hunt, 7, Daur, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Mary Hunt, 5, Daur, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Robert Hunt, 3, Son, born Govan, Lanarkshire
David Hunt, 1, Son, born Govan, Lanarkshire
John Sutherland, 32, Boarder, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Iron Founder
In 1901 John Sr is not with the family, yet you say he didn't die until 1908. Do you know where he was?
1901
55 Elder Park St, Govan, Lanarkshire
Mary Hunt, 42, Head, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
John Hunt, 23, son, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Boilermaker
Elizabeth Hunt, 17, Dautr, born Govan, Lanarkshire, confectioner
Mary Hunt, 15, Daur, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Robert Hunt, 11, Son, born Govan, Lanarkshire
David Hunt, 11, Son, born Govan, Lanarkshire, Scholar
James Hunt, 9, Son, born Govan, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Lewis Hunt, 6, Son, born Govan, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Sarah Hunt, 4, Dautr, born Govan, Lanarkshire
Isabella Hunt, 2, Dautr, born Govan, Lanarkshire
John Sutherland, 42, Boarder, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Ironmoulder
This could be him, also in Govan, but a Lodger in the house of John Smith, a police constable. Do you know what that was all about?
1901
23 Merryland St, Govan, Lanarkshire
John Smith, 41, Head, born Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Police Constable
Annie Smith, 41, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Jenny Smith, 8, Daur, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scholar
John Hunt, 43, Lodger, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Riveters Labourer
George Arthur, 25, Lodger, born Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Shop Assistant
Matthew McKay, 20, Stepson, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Engineer Fitters
Have you looked for Mary's death on Scotland's People? (Link at top of page). Just fiddling around with the search function, I see that there is a Mary Hunt, other surname Middleton, born 1857, who died in 1942 in Glasgow City. You should be able to download the image (for a small fee) and maybe there will be more clues to fill out the story.
All the best,
Sarah

Well, it's a quiet day on Talking Scot and I needed something to do while drinking my morning coffee
So, I was wondering about that gap between son John and daughter Elizabeth and went back to the previous census. It looks as though they had at least one child who died
In the 1881 census there is a David D Hunt who doesn't show up later.
1881
38 Fairfield St, Govan, Lanarkshire
John Hunt, 23, Head, born Govan, Lanark, Holder to Riveter
Mary Hunt, 23, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanark
John Hunt, 2, Son, born Glasgow, Lanark
David D Hunt, 3/12, Son, born Govan, Lanark
Margt Taylor, 16, Sister-in-law, born Glasgow, Lanark, Machmills Helper
The sister-in-law with the surname Taylor, rather than Middleton, is a puzzle. And I don't see a Mary Middleton with the right age and birthplace in 1871. Do you know who her parents were? I assume you have her marriage certificate, which should give their names.
Sorry, I know you want to go forward and here I am going backward
But the more about this family we can post, the more likely someone is to recognize something and help you put together the more recent history.
All the best,
Sarah

Hunting the Hunts
It has not gone without notice that John is missing from the 1901 census
however his appearance elsewhere seems to indicate a "domestic" tho' I've never heard a whisper. He is in his son John's wedding in 1908 and died in Sept, 1908. His wife Mary lived to 1942. Her father was Angus Middleton and her mother's MS was Drummond subsequently Dawson.Does this mean she married again? The name Drummond has beeb passed down in the family.
David Drummond Hont born1880 is not on the 1901 cecsus. Icannot find a death cert, for him. Mary Middleton birth is hard to find I,ve had about 7 hits not one born in Glasgow.
Cheers Jack

Re: Hunting the Hunts
Hi Jack,
This looks like it could be her father, but I don't find him again: Was his occupation given on Mary's death cert?
1851
19 Rutherford Lane, Barony, Lanarkshire
Andrew Boswell, 30, Head, born Saline, Fifeshire, Journeyman Joiner
Janet Boswell, 26, Wife, born Dumbartonshire
John Boswell, 2, Son, born Barony Taresh, Glasgow
James Boswell, 1 mo, Son, born Barony, Glasgow
Angus Middleton, 20, born Irvine, Ayrshire, Apprentice Painter
This is a possibility for Mary in 1861. If so, it looks like she had a twin sister Elizabeth.
1861
Sunk Flat, Blythswood, Glasgow Barony
John Proverbs, 48, Head, born Ireland, Iron Moulder
Jane Proverbs, 45, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanark, Lapper Cuttes(?)
William Proverbs, 19, Son, born Glasgow, Lanark, Bakers (ap)
John Proverbs, 6, Son, born Glasgow, Lanark, Scholar
Mary Middleton, 3, Visitor, born Glasgow, Lanark
Elizabeth Middleton, 3, Visitor, born Glasgow, Lanark
I'm wondering whether Mary might have been illegitimate and therefore have the name Drummond on her birth cert. There doesn't appear to be a marriage for that couple.
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
I can't find David D Hunt's death even with the info you supplied, must be me I can't seem to find anything.
Angus Middleton was a Housepainter on his daughter's wedding Cert. in 1878. Mary Hunt who died in 1942 is my G grandmother.
Cheers Jack
