In today's Sunday paper an article appeared and thought you may be interested.

"Tour the world with a bird's-eye view from Google Earth.

"The program lets you view satellite and aerial photos of pretty much any spot on the planet. In big metropolitan areas in the US, Canada and Western Europe you can locate and zoom in on Individual buildings and houses, and see cars and trees. The program rapidly fetches the images from the Internet and visually "flies" you from place to place around the globe"

(Me Again) If this program allows you to zoom in on trees and cars, I would say it should allow you to view churchyards?

Hello Dennis,

Thank you for correcting the web address. It seems to be working now. I've revised the e-mail address in my above post. The article also stated demand was so high that the company's servers were overwhelmed, so Google is intermittently turning off downloads.

Hello Marilyn.

I think that the images we see on the 'free' version is not uptodate; a friend had a house built within the past year but the lot still looks empty. Perhaps the paying ones give more uptodate views.

But, it is cool tho:)

Hi All

I took my PC in this week to add some memory, so tonight was my first time trying this site on my own PC. Viewed it once on my husband's , but he won't let me stay on his computer too long. I guess he is afraid I'll fill it with all kinds of maps, documents, pictures and e-mails

Tip: When searching an address, you'll need to seperate it by a comma.

Ex: 13 MACDOWALL STREET, JOHNSTONE, RENFREWSHIRE, SCOTLAND

Without the comma is did not work for me. Its a free download give it a try. What I found very interesting was the aerial view of the land and a much better understanding of the highway system.

Hello

My understanding is that the images on the Earth Google computer are about 3 years old, there is an update button on their site but having tried it a number of times nothing seems to change.

Hi Iain,

My understanding of the Google Earth updates is that these are program updates, not updates of the aerial views.

I read recently that they claim to update these views about once every two or three years. That is for them to update at their side, not something that you have to download program updates for. You can only view the images that they have available wia their internet service.

Some nations were questioning the security implications of such views being available, so it is possible that some complete countries could disappear from Google Earth at some time.

OK, understand what you are saying, my misinterpretation of what they were saying.

I imagine that there are many countries that would wish for certain areas to be non-viewable.

Makes it fun trying to find them though :))

But back to genealogy before I get barred, I have used it to have a good look around Dundee and the local area with some success.
