help windows vista

Post by Carolann » Mon Sep 15, 2008 10:57 am

Hi

Can anyone help me. I have for sometime trying to may discs for the 1881 census onto this new laptop which has windows Vista which I must admit I do not like.

Anyway have been trying on and off for some months and cannot get the disc loaded on to view - do I need to load a resource file view on or is there something on windows vista I don't have to.

I have it loaded onto my other laptop and desk pc no bother it is just this laptop.

Any help woud be much appreciated to a very inexperienced computer user.

Cheers

Carolann

Hi Carolann,

Try this solution, given on the PC Advisor forum.

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index ... forumid=23
PC Advisor forum wrote:1. Install the Resource File Viewer 4.0
2. Right-Click on the Resource File Viewer icon on your desktop and select Properties.
3. Click the Compatibility Tab
4. Put a check in the box to run in compatibility mode for: and make sure that Windows XP (Service Pack 2) is selected.
5. Put a check in the box to "Run this program as an administrator"
6. Click OK
It didn't work for me. I still get a "run time error", but haven't given up yet. I suspect my problem may be that it is the 64-bit version of Vista that I have, and I thinnk it throws more errors up than the 32-bit version.

All the best,

AndrewP

I had the same problems!

I eventually had to phone LDS (in Salt Lake City) and they sent me an updated viewer which is Vista compatible. It works a treat for the Cencus Disks but the BVR's - forget it!!

The person I spoke to said that there wasn't any way round it so I've got to switch computers every time I want to look anything up.

Hi Anne,

What version of the Veiwer program did they send you?

I have Viewer 4.0 here. It shows copyright dates of 1998 and 2001, so is getting on a bit in computer terms.

All the best,

Hi,

I'm having the same problem. I can't view the 1881 discs since I got my new computer which has Vista.

Hi Carol Anne and Andrew,

I also purchased a Vista two months ago and I dislike it very much. I was so busy trying to find how to increase the text, (and still trying) I forgot to try my 1881 census. Now thanks to Andrew this morning and following his instructions I had no problem installing it.
Unfortunately my major problem with this Vista is still there - The print is so small I am only able to use my PC for a short period of time these days before getting a headache!
I went to View then Text and checked Largest but it is still the smallest.
It is a nightmare reading the "Windows email" which was installed.

There’s some British Vital Records stuff here http://labs.familysearch.org/

Is it the same as what’s on the BVRs CDs?

For Elizabeth,

I have XP and an old CRT monitor and the following may not work the same for Vista and the LCD monitor you probably have but you could give it a go. Everything probably looks small because you have a new monitor displaying at a much higher resolution than your old one.

Sometimes text is easier to read if you set things to clear type fonts. Right click the desktop and select properties then click the appearance tab then the effects button and you’ll see something about screen fonts. Set this to clear type.

Another way is to right click the desktop and properties and click the appearance tab you may see a way there of changing the font size to large or extra large

If the above wasn’t any help you could try changing the resolution of the monitor, this is easy with the old CRT types but may not work satisfactorily with an LCD which has a native resolution at which it works best. Right click the desktop and select properties then click on the settings tab and you may see a slider you can use to change the resolution. Take a note of what it is set to and move it to the next lower resolution and click ok. Everything should appear larger but if it is fuzzy or whatever just change it back to what it was.

Hope this helps,
Alan

Thank goodness it isnt just me  :D
I recently got a new laptop with Vista and I cant use the LDS CD's neither BVRI or 1881 Census ones. I get the main page but when I try to load a CD it comes up an error message.
After all this time you would think the LDS would have come up with a patch for this compatibility problem, oh well it looks like my Cd's will just have to sit and collect dust like my lang deid yins. :(
I missed this topic as I find work is getting in the way of family history, curses he cried
