Lindsays in Cortachy and Clova

Post by Capn Pugwash » Sat Oct 18, 2008 6:10 pm

I am trying to trace my Lindsay ancestors, and have come to a standstill at the moment. My great great grandfather was Daniel Lindsay, born in 1825 in Cortachy, Angus. He married Jean Douglas (b 1835) of Aberlemno in 1855 in Forfar, though they do not seem to have remained together, He died in Forfar in 1885.
Daniel's father was David Lindsay, a shepherd, and his mother was Isabel(la) Eggo, both I think from Cortachy or the Clova area. This is where I come unstuck, as there is no shortage of Lindsay's in the area on ScotlandsPeople.
I would welcome any thoughts on this. I am hoping to visit the area next week on holiday, and while it is mainly for pleasure, it would be nice if I could progress my research a bit.

Thanks Annette,

As you say, an interesting one. I am doing my best to continue the occupational tendency in that household. However, I suspect that that David Lindsay was born a bit too early. I did find an 1841 census entry in the Records Office (but not on the website) which had a David Lindsay and wife Isabel in Kirriemuir parish which would place their dates of birth about 1795.
Trouble is, Lindsays and Eggos keep turning up in various combinations throughout the area.
Regards,

Keith

It might not be cheap but have you tried a sideways step?

In 1841 Daniel is living with his Uncles John and James and Aunt Ann. In the same household in 1851 he is still there with James and his sisters Ann and Margaret (Duncan). The three siblings are all still living together in 1861. You may not be able to pinpoint David but from his siblings info you could hopefully find out who his parents were.

I'd be surprised if they weren't the children of David Lindsay and Jean Lindsay.

Thank you very much for this, Annette. I'll certainly follow up.
I have meanwhile found a David Lindsay, born Feb 1793 in Cortachy and Clova, whose parents were Daniel Lindsay and Elizabeth Davidson. Wonder if the naming of son Daniel might be a lead.

Keith
