Hi Pearlite. The ScotlandsPeople index of marriages shows that Andrew Thompson and Christian Scott were married at Lanark in 1862. If you download the certificate it should give the names of the groom's and bride's parents.

Hello pearlite, and welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]

I assume you got the birth dates from the later censuses, since if it was from a birth record, you would know the parents' names! In the 1871 census Andrew says he was born in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. He is a carter. You'll have to go back to 1851 to find him with his parents in Lesmahagow. The only way to be sure you have the right family, and get the maiden name of his mother, is to look at his marriage and/or death certificates, as Bervonian suggested.

Good luck, and tell us if you hit a brick wall!
All the best,
Sarah

Sorry, no way out of that... it's what we all have to do. Unless you live close enough to New Register House in Edinburgh or Park Circus in Glasgow to go there in person, you'll have to use Scotland's People credits like the rest of us!

Don't forget that you can find out a lot of information just by using the free search function on SP and playing with the various choices of age, place, wildcards in the name, etc. until you are sure that the page you download will have the correct entry on it.

The marriage record will be easiest, as Bervonian has already found it for you, and you know where they are likely to be.

Good luck,
Sarah
