MacFarlane/Clark/Rhind

Post by Jacobsmom » Sun Nov 02, 2008 2:11 pm

Hi Everyone,

Looking for any information on MacFarlane's possibly of Arrochar, Dunbarton. Walter MacFarlane born about 1770 married a Catherine Clark and they had at least one child, Janet who married an Alexander Rhind.

I'd love to hear from anyone who may have a connection.

Thanks and take care,
Stephanie :)

Alexander and Janet had several children, not in any particular order- Catherine, William, Janet, Agnes, Walter, Isabella, Helen, William, Martin, Alexander and Mary, (who would be my great-great grandmother. She had a son out of wedlock named James. Her brother, Walter signed off on the certificate. James grew up to marry Elizabeth Moir and they had several children as well. Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, James, Martin, William, Robert, Alexander and Janet. (Who would be my grandmother) I know they lived in Falkirk and the surrounding areas. If any of this looks familiar, I'd love to hear from you.

Take care,
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

I knew I had a Rhind MI somewhere in my records - it just took me a wee while to find it!

I don't have any connections to the family but when I find an unusual surname, I note it down and take a few pics of the stone. The following is the inscription from a stone in Larbert Cemetery (Stenhousemuir), Stirlingshire but obviously I don't know if this family are related in any way.

"In loving memory of ALEXANDER RHIND died 10th January 1959 aged 64 years
Beloved husband of Mary McOustra
Also their dear son ALEXANDER WILLIAM RHIND died 24th May 1922 aged 12½ years
Also the above MARY McOUSTRA died 15th March 1961 aged 88 years."

If they turn out to be some of 'your lot', send me a PM with your personal e-mail address and I'll send you copies of the photos.

Anne

Hi Anne,

I will search abit more on the Alexander Rhind, I know there were two siblings with this name and the time looks about right for one of them.

I will contact you as soon as I know something. Thank you ever so much.

Take care,
Stephanie

Alexander Rhind

Hi Anne,

In doing the math, things aren't adding up. If this Alexander died in 1959 at the age of 64, that would have put his birth date at 1895. But according to marriage records Mary and he married in 1902. That would make him seven years old when he got married. Then with the birth of their son, he would have only been 15, which I know is possible but.....

And I'm not sure there is a connection here.

Sorry,
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

You're right.

After having another look at the inscription, Alexander's (the father) age at death was 84, not 64 as I had previously thought.

I should have said before, I transcribe what I think the MI's say so my apologies for this mistake.

I'll amend my records, and again, if you want copies of the photos, just get in touch.

Sorry for leading you up the garden path!!

Anne

That makes a little more sense and will go back over my records. I just appreciate your response. It's been a frustrating search but I plug on.

Take care,
Stephanie

In searching I haven't come across an Alexander Rhind born in 1875 but that doesn't mean he's not connected. I don't have a lot of information on the Rhind family.
Do you know Alexander's father's or mother's name?

I did however notice your last name is Anderson? My grandmother wrote to an Anderson during WWI, so I thought this was wonderful.

Take care,
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,

No, unfortunately I don't know anything about the family. I seem to have a good memory when it comes to remembering names from gravestones I've photographed - expecially unusual ones.

Anne

(Only an Anderson through marriage, but the less said about that the better!!)
