Barbara(Knight) Reid & Family - Clola-Old Deer

Post by Sandi » Sun Nov 16, 2008 6:31 pm

Hello: My hope is to find information on my great great grandmother - Barbara(Knight) Reid.

According to the 1901 census Barbara was 52 yrs of age and living in Clola/Old Deer and was a laundress with a boarder Maggie Tewnion.

I have not been able to find any death date for Barbara.

Barbara's parents were Alexander Knight & Jane Thompson.
Barbara's christening date - 7-ll-1848 in Belhelvie.

She had an illegitimate child, Isabella(Knight)Morrison (my great grandmother)

Barbara married James Bisset Reid 4-1-1871 in Savoch,Ellon.
They went onto have 3 children
Arthur
Robert
Elizabeth

The only information I have on these children is Arthur from 1901 census and he was living in Aberdeen North and was married to Elizabeth A and had 2 children:
Edith & Lilias

Would like to find Barbara's death date and also information on her 3 children with James Reid.

Thanks so much to all.

Hi Sandi
Have you tried earlier census records? The 1881 and 1891 should show the children you mention.

This looks like the family you mention in 1881:
Kinaldie, Old Deer, Aberdeen
James REID, 61, born Udny, Aberdeen
Barbara REID, 32 born Belhelvie, Aberdeen
Isabella O. REID daughter 14
Isabella KNIGHT step-dau 10
Arthur R. REID son 8
Robert REID son 4
Elizabeth B. REID daughter 9 m

As all children were born Aberdeenshire, you should be able to find their births. Those middle names( initials R for Arthur and B for Elizabeth) should help you trace then children forwards if you know the full name.

Best wishes
Lesley

:D Hi Lesley: Thanks so very much for your reply to my post - appreciate it.

I do have the census records, what I'am trying to locate is a death date for Barbara Reid, I know in 1901 she was still living.

My other quest is to try and locate information on their 3 children.

Here in the states our census goes to 1930 but I guess over your way it's only til 1901??

Thanks so much again for your help & Have a good day!!

Sandi

Hi Sandi
A search on Scotlands People for a marriage for an Isa* O* Reid reveals a marriage for an Isabella Ogilvi* Reid in Aberdeen in 1893. Could this be your one? You'd need to look at the marriage to check the given parents' names of the bride to know for sure.

Yes, there is 100yr closure on the UK census records, so the 1911 census will be available to view in 2012.

Best wishes

Hi Sandi

You've got a tough one here. I don't see a death for Barbara either yet. I did uncover the death of a young Elizabeth but her informant is a brother named Charles. I can only assume at this point that he was truly a half brother :-k but I haven't tracked that all down yet. Her DC is found indexed as:

1891 REID ELIZABETH BARCL F 11 OLD DEER /ABERDEEN 228/00 0047

And yes we're spoiled rotten here in the US with access to the census records through 1930!

Best wishes
Jean

Barbara(Knight)Reid & Family

Hi Lesley: Thank you for the information on Isabella O.Reid - that would be Barbara's step daughter.
Isabella's parent's would have been James B.Reid & Jean(Smith)Reid.

Regarding Elizabeth Reid - Barbara and James did have a daughter Elizabeth that was born in 1881. As far as Charles he could have been her half brother as James was married before but I do not know his children by first wife other then Isabella O.Reid.

Thanks guys so much for all your help, it's much appreciated.
