Burry of Angus
I have recently discovered I have/had a cousin I didn't know about. He is David Burry born in the Parish of Liff, Benvie & Invergowie; Angus, on the 4/4/1931. He is the son of David Burry and my aunt Sarah Low Gourlay. I thought that Sarah had died in the 'flu epidemic of 1918/19. Not so, she married and produced David Burry, but did die the following year, 1932. If anybody knows anything about the Burrys of Angus, I'd appreciate your response.

Hi John
Sadly a search on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk proves that your wee cousin died at age 5:
1937 BURRY DAVID M 5 FORTEVIOT /PERTH 354/00 0003
I'm not finding a corresponding death for his dad yet though. He appears to have been living in 1947 to be the informant for his father's death found indexed like so:
1947 BURRY DAVID NICOL M 86 LIFF~ BENVIE AND INVERGOWRIE /ANGUS 301/00 0018
Best wishes
Jean

Dear Jean
Thank you so much for your interest and prompt reply. I missed this on Scotlandspeople, because I confined my search to Angus. Currently, I don't have any credits with them. If you still have the entry accessable did it say cause of death. A family story says that a young boy or girl relative drowned around this time. An earlier correspondent had advised that his father died in 1973 after remarrying in 1946.
Thanks again

Hello Jean & John,
If you search in the Scotsman advanced search http://archive.scotsman.com/search.cfm for david burry as a phrase you’ll find an article 18th February 1937. It’s a pay site but the visible snippet says “BOY DROWNED IN PERTHSHIRE RIVER” so it probably refers to him.

Dear Bruce
Thanks very much for that. You also answered some indecipherable text on David Jnr's mother's death certificate which stated her residence as New Mill somewhere. Now I know that it is Dupplin [2 Ps on the certificate] She died in Dundee at my grandmother's house. Any way of getting the article off the net and sending to me at jgourlayATozemail.com.au ? No response yet from the newspaper.
thanks again

Dear Bruce
Thanks for all of your help. It was probably one of those pesky Dundee journalists who thought that the Tay was the centre of the universe. Having now checked the map and bearing in mind the mention of the railway line it was most likely the Water of May that poor little David drowned in.
regards
