Hi, I am trying to find a marriage for Henry Ross and Margaret [Baird ?]between 1861 and 1867 when they emigrated to USA . It wasn't showing on Scotlands people website or on IGIs as far as I can see. Henry came from Forres and was born 1840, Margaret was born 1849
Can anyone help please?

Hello Janneymc,
It's going to take somebody with full on ancestry to help but from what I can see Margaret arrived at USA in 1866 according to the 1900 census.
There is a Henry Ross living at New York in 1860 of the correct age.
They have a daughter Margaret born about 1870 in USA according to the 1880 census where they are living at California.
I think they may have been married in USA.
A look at the 1870 census might help.
Regards,
Annette

Hi janneymc,
Are you sure they married in Scotland? I see the family in Fresno, California (assuming I have the correct one) and the first child appears to have been born in 1870 in California. Baird seems to be Margaret's married name from a second marriage after the death of Henry. After following her children down the years and finally finding one who died in California so I could consult the California death index, it looks as though the mother's maiden name was Ryce. Given that, and the fact that in 1900 she states her birth as September 1849... the only birth for her on the IGI is the following:
Margaret Rice
Birth: 26 Sep 1849
Christening: 24 Oct 1849 Mauchline, Ayr
Father: Andrew Crawford Rice
Mother: Margaret Wilson
Now, plenty of people were not recorded on the IGI, so this may not be her. But it is a starting point.
All the best,
Sarah
Snap, Annette!

Hi again,
Andrew Crawford Ryce, his wife Margaret Wilson and several of their children are all in Fresno, California in 1880. Later census records for their son James indicates they came over in 1867. I think that's pretty conclusive... Having grown up in southern California I can tell you that no one goes to Fresno by accident
Although I can't find a passenger list for them, I would think that they all came over together and that Margaret married Henry Ross in California.
All the best,
Sarah

Henry and Margaret Ross
Yes its quite possible they met on the way out as 1867 is certainly the year I have for their emigration.
Im curious about the death record of one of their children that states the name Ryce. Can you tell me more about that please and which child it was. One of their children[Alice] married a George Rice and lived in Fresno.
Henry was still in Scotland in 1861 as he's on the census there with his family in Forres.
Thanks for all the help

Henry and Margaret Ross family
THat's Great .Thank you so much for that Sarah. I have had trouble finding this Margaret on the census. At least I thought I'd found her marrid to a George Miller in San fran then the next census gave her parents birthplaces as Ireland and SCotland not Scot and Scot. So I was a bit confused as to whether this was her or not.
Cheers

Margaret Ross/Baird
The other funny thing I discovered today is that Margaret R Baird is on the 1900 census twice, once as a lodger with new husband John R Baird and once at the farm with her children as Head. Im sure its her as the details are identical down to 3 years married, numbers of kids etc. What so you think about that?

Hi again,
In the U.S. there was no "census night" when everyone could be enumerated at the same time (too big a country, I suppose). Notice at the top that the census was taken with her husband on June 9 and with her children on June 28. I would suppose she was staying with the children on the night the enumerator passed by that house. I think the person was supposed to say that they had already been counted, but sometimes a duplicate appears like that.
Regards,
Sarah
