Hi Alan
As luck would have it - my 90 year old (sharp as a tack) mother-in-law is staying with us for the weekend - she was born in that area and still remembers it well. She thinks Baxters Buildings was a tenament building - located on the north side of Holyrood Road near to Bulls Close - she thinks it was owned by Youngers Brewery at that time.
Hope this helps

I have managed to find it on an old town plan of Edinburgh.
http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/edinbu ... _2_se.html
Sheet 36, about the Centre of the top third of the sheet.
Near St Andrew's Chapel.
There's a Rae's Building and St John's Place next to a Brass Foundry - this is in the 1870's though!
As far as modern day mapping is concerned, it would be around Viewcraig Street, DumbleDykes Road but that entire area has been rebuilt.

Hi Alan,
Looks like it was probably on the site more recently occupied by the (1960s?) Moray House building - part of a teacher training college, now part of the University of Edinburgh. I think that building may have also been demolished and replaced by a newer university building (since 2000?). As Wilma says, this site is surrounded by Holyrood Road, Dumbiedykes Road (1960s? housing) and Viewcraig Street (1960s? housing)
All the best,
AndrewP
