Hi Jimmy

I sympathise with your problem - I too have pedlars who are driving me nuts!

Refresh my memory with the details please, and I'll try to help.

Cheers

Ellen.

Hi Jimmy,

Seeings as your clutching at straws, I just thought I'd throw this your way. There is a James Devitt m. Isabella Mclean 19 feb 1869 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark on the IGI. Maybe Margaret Mclean was the illigitimate daughter of Isabella who then took on the name of Devitt when her mother married. I might just be leading you on a wild goose chase, but maybe you could look for this family on the 1871 census to see if they have a daughter Margaret living with them. I think this would also make Margaret rather old when she had your mother, but you never know.

Hello Jimmy,

I can only suggest, if your mother was abandoned in Stirling, that you get in touch with the city council as they may have information on her mother.

There does not appear to be a death recorded of Margaret McLean/Devitt or Ash on SP so perhaps she either died in Scotland after 1954 or outside Scotland if indeed she did die before 1936.

Hello Jim

I don't want to add any more geese to trail , but I did find a Margaret Ash who died 1938 in Perth. She is down as single , and a house keeper, the informant was her son Michael Ash . There is an RCE for this death but that might be because she was found dead on the floor.

However aged 20 in 1888 , at Partick, the same lady appears to have married Thomas Devitt , 21 , shipbuilders labourer , son of Patrick D and Mary Gordon .
Her parents were John Ash and Ann Folan ( dec) according to both the death and the marriage reg. A suitable birth turns up on the IGI for this Margaret in 1868, two other children born in Galway either side.

Unfortunately I can't link the surname McLean directly to this lady AND she would have been 40 when your mum was born AND she clearly wasn't dead in 1936 . NOR was she a pedlar at the time of her marriage or death.
But it is 2 of the surnames.

I tried to find this Ash/Devitt family , together or apart, in 1891 and 1901 , but failed miserably - perhaps they were in Ireland or on one of those planets some people's folks went to - I'm not sure i should have even mentioned this as it will probably drive you more insane.

A try, a try
