Medway Queen - Heroine of Dunkirk

Post by emanday » Tue Jan 06, 2009 2:46 pm

The BBC here in Bristol has just announced that this old paddle steamer is to be restored, compliments of the National Lottery.

I exist today only because my father was taken from the beach at Dunkirk. He could never remember the name of the ship that brought him home, but he did say it was a paddle steamer.

I wonder....

Thanks Mary, it might well have been.

It’s great to see these beautiful examples of the Shipbuilder’s art restored to their former glory, even without the Dunkirk connection. Here’s a couple more links.

It looks like it was given a new overall coat of grey paint and armament etc at some time before Dunkirk and chances are the name, if displayed, wasn’t very prominent and the ship may not have been particularly recognisable even to people who knew it.

All the best,
Alan
