Shathley Heenes.....

Post by AndrewP » Mon Jul 18, 2005 11:42 am

One of my ancestors has given his birthplace as Shathley Heenes, Perthshire in the 1881 census, according to the LDS CDs. Has anybody heard of this place - or have any clues what it should say? His documents give me few clues to go with.

1824 - marriage to Elisabeth Orr, Shotts Lanarkshire
1866 - widowed in Calderbank (Old Monkland, Eastern District)
1868 - married to Elizabeth Kemp in Edinburgh - age given as 60
1871 - census, living in Calderbank (Old Monkland, Eastern District) - age given as 70, birthplace Perthshire, N.K.
1881 - census, living in Calderbank (Old Monkland, Eastern District) - age given as 87, birthplace Perthshire, Shathley Heenes
1885 - died in Calderbank (Old Monkland, Eastern District) - age given as 85

His age seems to be quite elastic - giving a selection of potential birth years of 1808, 1801, 1794 or 1800. The 1868 marriage certificate gives his parents as Daniel Robertson and Christian Robertson (ms. McNab). His death certificate, registered by his son, gives parents unknown. His first wife, Elizabeth (Elisabeth) Orr was born in 1805 in Shotts Parish. I have not looked for the older censuses yet - they have to be my next port of call to see if they can help.

So, help... Any ideas abouut Shathley Heenes, Perthshire?

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew,

Sorry I can't help with Shathley Heenes, but I have to say that if YOU can't find it then it most probably doesn't exist!
One of my ancestors was on the 1881 census as born in Ecclesfield, Lanark, which should actually have been Eastfield (Rutherglen).
Perhaps it will have to be a look at an earlier census.

Regards,

Alison

Hi Andrew & Alison

I quite agree.....If you're not finding it  how the heck are we supposed to?? Looking at my Bartholomew Gazetteeer shows absolutely nothing within reason.....as close as I could possibly guess is a place shown on the map but not listed in the index......Strathyre Inn......which I cannot discern for sure if it were just an Inn or an actual village at that time but is situated just north of Loch Lubnaig. Not very likely is it

Best wishes anyhow!
Jean

Andrew,

Can't help with your original query but, I do have information about Calderbank if you want. My mother, her parents, grandparents and great grandparents all have connections to the village. For many years my grandfather was the barber in the village and my Grandmother ran the Newsagent/General Store. A book about the village is also available from the local history dept of Airdrie Library. I have two photos stored on my computer here at work of locations in Calderbank. If some nice kind person could tell me how to upload them, I will.

Regards,
Helen

Hi Alison, Jean, Davie and Helen,

I like Jean's suggestion of Strathyre Inn. On looking at the 1890's map on the NLS digital map website, Strathyre Inn appears to be the inn in Strathyre village (in Balquhidder parish).

I was considering the possibilities of Strath... or a gaelic placename that did not anglicise very well. I will keep all possibilities open, and I will follow up Davie's good advice by looking at the microfilm at the next opportunity.

As this shows, it is not beyond me to have a geography question. :?: ](*,)

Thanks, and all the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew,

These might help narrow things down.
--
1851 census - Daniel ROBERTSON, 50, b Dull, PER
1861 census - Daniel ROBERTSON, 61, b Dull, PER
--
So Dull has been given twice for the birthplace.

Hi Jack,

Thanks for these 1851 amd 1861 census entries.

Are these in Calderbank? Is wife Elizabeth shown in both of these? And any children? The only child's name that I have for sure is John, no dates known for him.

Now off to the NLS online maps to have a close look at Dull parish...

Thanks and all the best,

Andrew Paterson

I can tell you right quick it's no where's near Stratyre Inn!...a wee bit to the west of Aberfeldy....but then who really wants to say they were born in Dull!! 8)

Best wishes
