Irish birth help

Hi

I'm trying in vein to track down the birth for James Frazer who was married 11th May 1863 to Rachael Steen in Carrick, Londonderry.

His father is listed as John Frazer a Tide Waiter but no mother's name.

My Dad keeps nagging me to try and find out more info but the Irish records seem to be very sketchy, does anyone have any advice?

Statutory Irish BMDs did not start across the board until 1864. (Protestant marriages were recorded "officially" from 1845.) Prior to that you may find something in Church Records, but for that you need to know which precise church; not only whether they were Church of Ireland, RC, Quaker, Methodist or whatever, but also exactly where in Ireland. As it is likely that the marriage may have taken place in the area the bride came from, it may be difficult to find out where James came from unless you have other clues; it may be the same area, or it may not.

You may be able to find microfilms from the church on the LDS site which you can then order through your local LDS centre, but not all churches kept records and of those that did, not all have survived, and not all are available to the public. In some cases you may need to contact the individual church directly and ask.

I've obtained a couple of Irish marriage records and a birth record (actually a baptism record).

In all three only the father was named. From other posts in TS it seems that this is most often the case, unfortunately.

You could try finding more information on Family Search, the LDS site.

With a bit of creative searching on there I did manage to find three possible siblings for one of my Irish rellies. I'm holding on to that info in the hope of visiting Ireland sometime and "raiding" the records

if you look at the Griffiths valuation which is available free at http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php
you can find a Jane Frazer listed in the parish of Carrick. The list for this parish was recorded in 1858 - so might have some connection for you.
No Steens listed there although there are Steens in other parishes in Londonderry. It might be worth therefore finding out if there are any Church of Ireland parish records for Carrick.

I wonder if one of their mothers was named Matilda and the other Jane?
