Disappearing Simpson family

Post by Muriel » Wed Jan 21, 2009 9:42 pm

Can of you Talking Scotties suggest what has happened to this family:

Thomas Herbertson Simpson b. 28 Jan 1855, Glasgow
Mary Harriet Simpson b. 11 Feb 1857, Glasgow
Jane Williamina Simpson b. 6 Sep 1859, Inverkip, Renfrewshire

They were the children of Thomas Herbertson Simpson & Jane Henderson Temple. Jane died in 1869 & Thomas senior in 1880. I have the family in the 1861 & 1871 censuses. In 1881 Thomas junior & his sisters are living together at 230 West Regent Street, Glasgow. Thomas, like his father, was a butcher & is shown as employing 3 men, 1 woman & 3 boys. I'm presuming this is his father's business, which is shown in father's will as being at 133 Main Street - I admit to not having read the will, which may insist that they go & live in Timbuktu.

In the 1882-3 PO Directory Thomas is shown as a butcher at 133 Main Street, living at 285 West Campbell Street. By the time of the 1883-4 Directory, there is no sign of Thomas at either address. I can find no marriages or deaths for Thomas or his sisters, nobody who looks likely in the 1891 census for either Scotland or England & Wales, nothing obvious in the shipping records.

I suppose it could be [alien] but that's not an explanation I favour so HELP :?

Hello Muriel,

Free BMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
Marriages Sep 1904 Islington 1b774
These are the people on the page but did he marry Annie or Agnes?
Hales Agnes Elizabeth
Johnson Annie Elizabeth
Simpson Harry
Simpson Thomas Herbertson

A search of the old official 1901 census site http://www.1901censusonline.com/search. ... ith_locale brings up this fellow in the results
Thomas H Simpson, 47, Glasgow, London, Islington, Butcher

This looks like it could be him in the 1911 Census using a birthplace Scotland http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx?5
SIMPSON, THOMAS, M, 1854, 57, Chesterfield, Derbyshire
When you use the other household members search there’s nothing for Agnes but there appears to be an Annie Simpson about his age.
SIMPSON, ANNIE, F, 1853, 58, Chesterfield, Derbyshire

If that’s them there are some deaths on FreeBMD that look possibilities.

Deaths Mar 1922
Simpson Annie 69 Chesterfield 7b828

Deaths Sep 1922
Simpson Thomas 68 Chesterfield 7b624
Deaths Jun 1927
Simpson Thomas 73 Chesterfield 7b701

Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Alan, thank you so much for that :D - I thought I had checked FreeBMD quite thoroughly but obviously not! I think all the possibilities you have come up with look pretty good. Now I just need to decide whether I'm willing to shell out the cost of E&W certificates for someone who's a fairly distant cousin!!

Hi Trish

Yes, I remembered I'd a few credits with GR so had a look at this entry. I reckon it's Dame Street, altho' I haven't checked the maps yet. It looks likely to be my Thomas as he married in Islington in 1904. Now to find the girls!

Hi Andrew,

Thanks, I'd found it in my ancient A-Z of London - not much different in many ways from where he lived in central Glasgow.
