Emerald ancestors help please

Post by crayspond » Sat Feb 14, 2009 11:55 am

Hi,

I have ran out of my subscription to Emerald ancestors and wonder if anyone who still has one could look up the following in the deaths below for me - i have no birth only that Jane his daughter was born c 1846

1857 James Dickson Down

1865 James Dickson Down

1878 James Dickson Antrim / Down

1879 James Dickson Down

I am looking for any mention of wife Elizabeth Murphy and daughter Jane,
I will also post this in the Ireland section.

Thanks,
Ailsa

Some ideas

Even if James died after 1864 only the person reporting the death will be mentioned, no relationship will be given.

Since James and Eliza Murphy married in Dromore there is the possibility that this was James in 1863:

Primary Valuation

Tenant
Family Name 1 DICKSON
Forename 1 JAMES
Landlord
Family Name 2 DOAKE
Forename 2 SAMUEL
Location
County DOWN
Barony IVEAGH, LOWER (LOWER HALF)
Union BANBRIDGE
Parish DROMORE
Townland KINALLEN
Place Name KINALLEN
Place Type TOWNLAND
Publication Details
Position on Page 19
Printing Date 1863
Act 15&16
Sheet Number 28
Map Reference 60

Perhaps your best bet is the Marriage: 08 APR 1834 Dromore Parish, Down, Ireland

With a bit of luck both Fathers will be mentioned.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Ailsa,

I was just looking at the IGI. It has Jane Dickson being born 23 Apr 1837, Dromore Parish, Down, Ireland. Is this your Jane?

Also, there are births of four children born to Jane Dickson and James McFarlane: Elizabeth 1873 Bangor, Down, Margaret Christine 1875, Belfast, Antrim, James 1878 Antrim, and Ellen 1880 Belfast, Antrim. Are those yours?

From Emeraldancestors:

Deaths: 1857 James Dickson 1 Jun 1857 Probate 1858 Res. Ballyrolly

1865 James Dickson 17 Feb 1865 Probat 1868 Res. Lisdoonan

1878 James Dickson 10 Sep 1878 Probate 1878 Res. 71 Divis St. Belfast

1879 James Dickson 27 Nov. 1879 Probate 1870 Res. Elmfield

Thanks to both for the replies,

Andy,

I have had no luck finding a marriage for James and Elizabeth online, i would gladly pay for it if i could find where to get a copy. The records don't seem to be there.

Carol,
I think either the IGI has made an error in the date (1837) or they had a daughter Jane who died and then another who they named Jane also. James McFarlane was born c 1846 so i can't imagine she was 10 years older than him.
You are right with the children of James and Jane i do know of them, they returned to Glasgow with them all and then had the last child Jane in Glasgow before settling in Clydebank/Dalmuir. That is where i got the info that James and Jane were married in Belfast.

This is the frustrating thing about it - i thought i would be able to get the marriage cert of Jane's parents James Dickson and Elizabeth Murphy quite easily and then when i eventually go to Ireland i would know where at least to visit.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Regards
Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

I think you're likely correct about there being two Jane's with the earlier one dying. That happened very frequently, but I also have several marriages in my family where the wife is the older of the two as much as six years in one of them though that was a second marriage for both.

It is very frustrating to find lots of information from secondary sources on relatives then not be able to find the original record. Not much any of us can do though except sympathize! It amazing to me that so many of these early records have survived. I have a list of people I keep hoping to find that one piece of paper or gravestone for!

Records

Because there is an extract I am assuming they were Protestant, Catholic Church records weren't filmed by LDS.

There is no mention of the records being available locally at the Dromore Church but a copy could be sent from PRONI or the National Library of Ireland.

If you're close to a Family History Centre they could order up the Film for you:

Hi Andy,

Many thanks for your help. I have emailed Proni with the details and i will await their reply. If i have no luck i will venture to my nearest Family History Centre.
I now at least have a date for their marriage to go on.

Regards,

Ailsa
