I have hit a brick wall with my ancestry search and am hoping someone at TalkingScot may be able to help
I have searched just about every online site available. Have spent a small fortune on ScotlandsPeople and have been able to obtain quite a bit of useful BMD's.
My great grandfather Robert Campbell B1852 D1929 Glasgow.
My gg grandfather Neil Campbell B1811 D1858 married to Isabella Scott.
Their youngest child Isabella B1855. On her birth certificate states Neil was born in Londonderry. (Have been unable to find any records of his birth). I did find his marriage certificate to Isabella Scott. They married in Barony Scotland 1833.
My ggg grandfather was also named Neil Campbell and married Catherine Whitelaw. I have been unable to find any information on these ancestors at all.
I did find on the LDS site three children born to Neil and Catherine - Robert B1820, Jane B1825, Catherine 1828, but not gg grandfather Neil B1811?? I have rattled on and have run out of space Sorry

I can't see them any further on on the freecen site, but SP will have them.
You are actually very fortunate to find an 1855 birth - with all that extra information. Most of us just find 'Ireland' as place of birth.

Yes I'm sure that's them in 1841. Here they are in 1861 living at Dobbies Loan but I'm sure you have this -

This is the family . I have managed to find them on most of the census's. I have been using Ancestry.com and have been lucky enough to have my grandparents vital records.
My grandmother was Elizabeth Campbell B1901 in Glasgow Scotland. Her father was Robert Campbell B1852 and I was then able to obtain gg grandfather Neil Campbell and Isabella's info off his death certificate from ScotlandsPeople.
Now I am stuck on ggg grandfather Neil Campbell and Catherine Whitelaw. I am bouncing all over the place Maybe I need to drag myself away from the computer for awhile.

T his is my family - Neil passed away in 1858 and that's how we worked out his death as he didn't turn up on the 1861 census. I obtained his death certificate from ScotlandsPeople. Nearly everybody in Scotland around this time had a 'Neil' in their family .
I am amazed at how quickly you and Wonka access the info. I've been at it for over six months

I'm looking at the IGI results you reported....3 children Robert, Jane, and Catherine.

Catherine's OPR birth is numerically labelled as their 5th child.

The Robert that I found was christened in Girvan and his father was a weaver. They also had a Sarah...

02/07/1815 CAMPBELL SARAH NIEL CAMPBELL/CATHARINE WHITLOW FR485 F Girvan /AYR 594/ 0020 0279

Soooo that hypothetically makes

Neil b. abt 1811
Sarah b. 1815
Robert b. 1820
Catherine b. 1825
Jane b. 1828

and one other before Catherine.....and yet two more before Jane
if these are all the same family...which does appear possible as I've just found the occupation of Neil on the birth of Jane as a "weaver"!

Hi Jean,

Cannot believe you have been able to find out that information so quickly. I know this sounds silly but what does IGI mean
I think the spelling of Whitelaw differs from year to year which has been confusing me.
Neil was a Handloom Weaver according to son Neil's death certificate in 1858.

Am quoting from your original post. You referred to finding data on the LDS site. Well the IGI is the International Genealogical Index and is one of the search areas on the www.Familysearch.com (LDS) website. I was assuming this is where you had located your info! Yes you are correct in that you have to watch the spelling of Catherine's surname!!! I was hesitant to call the christenings that I found all part of the same family until I located info to indicate that Neil was a weaver in both Girvan and in Barony and the christenings that I did find seemed to logically fit together. At the moment I'm not finding anything else of interest about your family though. It appears that both Neil and Catherine were deceased before 1855's beginning of statutory registration and most likely even before 1841 census. I've not spent alot of time trying to prove that or to trace any of the siblings to see if they survived to adulthood so this might be a logical focus for you. If you can't go backward sometimes you can move laterally and still learn alot!

Please keep asking any questions you might have....there are loads of people here who have all sorts of expertise.
