Hi,
Can anyone help me with this one ? I have an ancestor who came over from Ireland in the 1860's. His name was Stephen Telford and he married in 1868 in Partick, Glasgow. His parents were George (a farmer) & Abigail (Benson). They later changed their name to Tedford.
How do I find out whereabouts in Ireland he came from ? I've already tried the census's (the only one he doesn't appear in is the 1871 one.)
Thanks,
Daryl

Hi Daryl
A few directions jump to mind:
1. If they applied for poor relief in the Glasgow area (and many Irish arrivals did at some point) that would be well worth checking as the application form often mentions the place of origin. (Mitchell Library)
2. The Griffiths Valuation (just to see where Telfords were in Ireland)
see http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/
3. This surname search (again, just to see where Telfords were in Ireland)

Best wishes

He's there in Partick in 1871, with his wife and young son. His birthplace gives you no more information than you already have.
All the best,

They are at 12 Castle Bank St, Partick, Govan
Roll: CSSCT1871_144
Reg Number: 646/3
ED: 3
Household schedule number: 205
On Ancestry they are mistranscribed as Ledford
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Daryl
You could try a search for George Telford at:
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4 ... h_form.php
just to see where the George Telfords were situated around 1848 to 1864, given that your George was a farmer, and on the assumption he was still living at that point. He may be listed, but quite how you know which one he is without any other info (like a county, parish or townland) I'm afraid I don't know. Great pity there was nothing to be found at the Mitchell as the poor law records can be a wonderful source of info about our Irish families who came to Glasgow, often mentioning places of birth etc.
Best wishes
