My 3x great grandmother was Flora MacMillan. She was born (c1810) in the tiny crofting hamlet of Blaich, Kilmallie, near Fort William.
I believe she left the area for Glasgow around 1837, possibly when the crofts were partly 'cleared' by the then caretaker of the Ardgour estate, the dour looking Colonel McLean. I think there's a chance her siblings left too. But where did they go? And who were they? I have no idea what their names may have been as yet (still working on that side of the family) but her father was Duncan MacMillan, and her mother was Jean/Janet or Jane (seems they're interchangeable names north of the border!) possibly MacMillan also (I think her parents may have been cousins, which I understand isn't unusual in those highland commumities).
From the background reading I've done about the MacMillan clan, it's likely that that branch of the family originated along the north shore of Loch Arkaig, with lines leading back as far as the early chiefs of Murlagan and beyond. And I know from what I've read about the Clearances that there's a chance that I could have distant cousins in Canada, the US and Oz. I'd love to hear from them, or anyone who thinks they may be connected to that line.
Regards,
Ann
Any Lochaber MacMillans out there?
