Help! I am completely flummoxed!
Tried to trace the Tripney family pre-computerisation but had to give up due to lack of time, transport etc.
Trying again and started off well, but now I'm stuck. I'm looking for the parents of John Tripney, born c.1829, coal miner in Polmont area in Stirlingshire, m. Janet Mirlees 2/11/1850, resided in Summerhouse, 6 children -John, George Janet Mary Margaret and Jane.
Tried viewing his marriage cert on Scotlandspeople but no image available, cannot find a birth certificate for him or Census records, there are 2 John Tripneys in the same location and age group but wrong parents.
He died 11/4/1866 at Falkirk Railway Station aged 37 - according to the Falkirk Herald it was a 'Mysterious and Fatal Accident'. Parents are named on death certificate as John Tripney, coal miner (dec) and Mary Tripney nee Johnston (dec). Found a couple with same names, Bathgate/Muiravonside but their children were Mary 1809 Isabel 1811 John 1813 and Thomas 1816. This couple seem to be almost a full generation out and their John was born 1813, even if he had died in infancy surely it is unlikely they had another child as late as 1830.
Also, on this death certificate there is a note in the margin which I can't make out, 'see Register of .......... 27 July 1866'. Could this have been an inquest or investigation into his death that this is maybe referring to? (can't figure out how to forward this certificate on this site but could email it to someone)
Can anybody please help?
Can I really exhaust your patience with another related question? Are there any records of coal mining or miners in Scotland pre-1900s? All my ancestors seem to be coal miners (and all called John Tripney which really confuses things).
I'd really appreciate some help cos I feel I'm going round in circles now. Most of my info has come from compter.org, genuk, genes reunited, family search, cyndis list, rootsweb, LDS plus a brief visit to Callendar Park to view the Falkirk Herald. My next step is probably to try Falkirk for the OPRs which are not computerised. I'm starting to feel out of my depth now so if anyone knows of a genealogy or family history class or group in Lanarkshire, PLEASE let me know.

I'm sure you will get plenty of help from the experts but the first thing I would do is look at the birth entry (if you haven't already done so) of John's daughter Janet who was born on 7th January 1855. It won't tell who John's parents are but it should tell you his age and exact place of birth.
You can upload your cerificate to the gallery by clicking on gallery at the top of this page then read and follow the instructions.
The writng at the side will be a reference to the Register of Corrected Entries as John's death was unusual.
If you follow the links at the top of this page you will be able find Family History Societies etc.
Hope this helps a bit.
Regards,

Hi Moira,
The 1850 marriage certificate, along with all of the pre-1855 information is only available as an index so far. Work is underway to put the OPRs (Old Parochial [Parish] Records) online, but it is taking a long time, and is not expected to be available this year. The OPRs that you are looking for should be available for you to view, on microfilm, if you can get to the main library in Falkirk.
The RCE connected with the death certificate is only available at New Register House in Edinburgh. There are plans for the RCEs to go online, but indexing diificulties are holding them back. The plan had been for this year, but that now seems unlikely. The schedule can be seen at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/conte ... ?r=554&413 but don't take the dates there for definite - in fairness, I would regard them as intended dates, but technical difficulties make these dates unlikely for the OPRs and RCEs.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hi,
I'd take another trip back to Callendar House in Falkirk. They have the microfilms of the censuses there, and lots of other information.
The 'Summerhouse' that they stayed in was probably the one outside Shieldhill, in Which case it varies as to which area it comes under - Sometimes Polmont or Falkirk [Landward] or Muiravonside.
A look at Tom Paterson's site :
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/members/tom.paterson/
won't actually help much in this puzzle but may be useful for other Tripney names [ a John Tripney married a Mary Tripney in Muiravonside in 1869 for instance
].
I live in the mining area of Falkirk so if I can be of any help with locations etc do ask - my husband comes from a long line of coalminers.

Hi, Tried to find John and George's birth certificates, no image; Janet's birth certificate, no trace. Mary was born Slamannan, Margaret in Jawcraig, Jane in Summerhouse (Why can't the beggar stay put
). In actual fact they're all reasonably close together but unfortunately different parishes, and most events were registered in Falkirk or Polmont. On each cert that I found, it only gave the parents names and place of marriage as Slamannan, no date of birth for father, only that he was present, and his occupation. So, still not much help I'm afraid.
Found there is a Local History group meets in Motherwell but not until mid-September - If any of you see a wee bald woman turn up at the first meeting it'll be me - I'll have pulled all my hair out by then
I kind of guessed Summerhouse was Falkirk heading towards Polmont so thanks for that. He died near Falkirk Railway Station so I was assuming he was on his way home. Still can't read the margin entry, doesn't look like Register of Corrected Entries but I managed to list it in the gallery so if anyone could help with that I'd appreciate it.

I'm on holiday next week so guess where I'll be going - Falkirk Library
Thanks for all your help, it's really appreciated.

Unmfortunately the 1855 record for Janet, daughter of John TRIPNEY and Janet MIRRLEES is a christening, and the birth was in 1854.
There is an 1855 birth for a Janet TRIPNEY, in Polmont, illegitimate daughter of David GILLESPIE, and, from a margin note, looks like the registrar entered the father's name before he became aware that the child was illegitimate and that the father wasn't present at the registration.
