George Thompson

Post by raybfarrow » Mon Mar 16, 2009 5:46 pm

Hi,

I wonder if anybody can help me!! I have been searching for birth records for my great grandparents for several months now but have not been able to find them. I was born in the Falkland Island. My great grandparents George and Margaret Thompson emigrated there in 1868. I was always led to believe that they came from Dumfries. The only definite information I have is that they married in Kelton, Caelaverock in July 1867, had a child, Robina in October 1867 and arrived in the Falkland Islands 13th June 1868. Their marriage certificate give his parents as Joseph and Mary Thomson (formerly Newell), both deceased and her parents as Jean Black (deceased) and Robert Scott. I have not been able to find any records for any of these either. Margaret was 18 when they got married and George 20. George died in the Falkland Islands 8/9/1819 but I have no record of Margaret's death.

Hi Lynne
..and welcome to Talking Scot :D
The only definite information I have is that they married in Kelton, Caelaverock in July 1867
Can you tell us what Church is stated on the 1867 marriage entry please?
e.g. Does it say "after banns acccording to the forms of the Established Church" or does it say something different?

Have you foudn either person in the 1861 census? That should give you place of birth.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lynne,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]

What were the occupations given on the marriage certificate for the fathers of George and Margaret? If we can track them down on the censuses you may stand a better chance of finding the birth records.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi again,
Here she is in 1861-- Ancestry has her mother and aunt(?) transcribed as Bluck  The ages make no sense either... would have to see the original.

Thankyou for your prompt replies. The marriage does state "after banns according to the Forms of the Established Church of Scotland". George was a farm servant from Blackshaw, Margaret was a domestic servant from Kelton and Joseph Thomson was an agricultural labourer. The occupations of the other three were not stated. I found a Margaret Scott aged 2 in 1851 living with grandparents Robert and Agnes Black and Janet and Jane Black (presumably her mother). I found her again in 1861 aged 12 living with Janet and Jane but without a birth I do not know if she is the right Margaret Scott.

Hi again,
I'm wondering if you have checked the death certificate of the Jane Black who died in Caerlaverock in 1865. The search on Scotland's People comes up empty if you indicate an age-- only if you tick the box "Include unrecorded ages in age range". See this from Scotland's People:

Note 2:Age at death is not recorded in a proportion of the indexes for deaths occurring between 1855 and 1865, although it is present on register entries. The missing ages are gradually being added to the indexes by GROS.

It might be good to see if any marriages are indicated on her death cert, since she goes by Black in all the censuses (if they are, indeed, the right woman). If Margaret was illegitimate, there may be a mention of her birth in the Dumfries Kirk Session Minutes.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Lynne and Sarah,

Here's something interesting:

14/03/1850 SCOTT MARGARET THOMAS SCOTT/AGNES JARDINE FR2031 F Dumfries /DUMFRIES 821/ 0080 0217

This is an OPR from SP. Note the Agnes Jardine as mother. I had a look at the death certificate you suggested above for Jane Black. She was single and her parents are shown as Robert Black, Mariner and Agnes Jardine.

Carol :o
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Dear Lesley and Sarah,

I have dug out all the information I can find on Robert, Agnes, Janet and Jean Black. The only thing I haven't found yet is the marriage between Robert and Agnes. Jean was born September 1823. It says "lawful to". What does this mean?
I too wondered about the birth of Margaret Scott to Thomas and Agnes (Jardine) in 1850 but in the 1851 census Robert and Agnes were living together with Margaret as their grand-daughter. I also think Margaret was born somewhere between July and February because she was 18 when she got married in July and 19 when she left for the Falkland Islands on 29.2.1868. They left from London on a ship called the "Athole". I can't find any information on the ship either. Also on board the same ship were Joseph Thompson aged 19 and his sister Isabella 21. I don't know if they were related to George or not.

Still no sighting of George. I haven't been able to find him in any of the census.

Regards Lynne

Hi Lynne,

A child born lawful to a couple indicates that the couple were married. The opposite to that is a child born natural to the couple indicates that the couple were not married.

All the best,
