XP AND VISTA
My husband wants his own computer, I am always complaining about the length of time he spends on mine.
I see Dell and another company are offering XP on one of their models and Vista on the others.
I have been happy with XP and know nothing of Vista except what I have read.
My question is how long will Microsoft offer support for XP?
My previous computer had Windows 95 and I remmember they pulled the plug on that.

Hello Wini,
Security Update support is supposed to continue until April 2014. There’s always the possibly of extension beyond that if the Windows XP operating system is still widely used. Support for Vista should be due to end about then. Windows 7, the next version of Windows, is already waiting in the wings.

XP AND VISTA
Thanks Alan,
I haven't read your references yet but previous reports I have read seem to suggest that the new OP is a continuation, with some changes of Vista.
Think I might stay with XP

When my daughter's laptop came with Vista installed nearly a year ago she decided to give it a go, even though I'd mentioned that it wasn't getting great responses from most folk.
I think she's given it every chance to prove itself (she uses her laptop daily), hoping that all the updates and "fixes" would sort out the many and various problems to go away.
Well, she finally spent two days copying, backing up and transferring all her stuff to an external disk and installed XP instead.
I should also add that she works for a huge insurance company who, after having their IT bods test Vista, chose to stay with XP!!
I think Microsoft really dropped the ball with Vista.

I've been using Vista for a couple of years and after a few teething problems, have no problems with it. It does take a wee bit of getting used to though!
My main problem was that although the 1881 Cencus will run, using an updated viewer, the Vital Records won't and there doesn't seem any way round it.

Hello Anne,
I’m not familiar with the BVRI setup but there’s a couple of procedures here you may not have tried.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.ph ... c=345945.0
http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums ... hp?t=23068
I read somewhere you can run it as administrator if you right click the viewer icon and select the same (under properties?)
Hope something works,
Alan

Thanks for the links Allan.
I think I've tried all the solutions, but I might have another go.
As long as I get the 'idiot's guide' instructions I'm fine, but anything sounding in the least technical - my brain just shuts down!!
Anne
P.S. If memory serves me correctly, it was after my phone call to
LDS in Salt Lake City - I just gave up!

Like you Anne, after a poorish changeover period (not helped by the new Dell being faulty and having to be changed) and plenty of good advice from TS folks, I have been happy with Vista - and I LOVE the Photo Gallery. Dealing with photos suddenly got simple.

My advice - either wait until October 22nd and buy a new PC with Windows 7, or buy a new PC now with Vista, and ensure that you get the voucher that will enable you to get the free upgrade to Windows 7 when it's released in October.
Windows 7 is fantastic - much better than Vista. AND it has a feature called Windows XP Mode whereby you can run a "virtual" Windows XP PC on your Windows 7 desktop (i.e. a PC within a PC) so you can run any applications in XP that may not run on 7 (although I've hit no real obstacles yet).
I have been using Windows 7 since it's beta stage, and everyone who I have shown it to, prefers it to XP and to Vista.
