Campbell John..brn abt 1807 ?? and Christina born 1811.

Post by gayze » Thu Apr 02, 2009 5:06 am

This is my first post to TalkingScots and need some advice/help please.

My gggrandfather John Campbell served in the army 42nd Regt and Rifle Brigade enlisting in 1825, saying he was 18yrs old and born in Barony, Glasgow. and was a Carpenter by trade
I have tried in vain to establish his parentage. there are too many choices with such little information.
I cannot get his death certificate because he died in Ceylon..in 1862, prior to their civil registration
He served in various countries O/S for over 20 yrs discharged to Chelsea Pension and was in UK for only one Census 1851..where he was in Manchester Lancs ho107/2224 with his second wife Mary and 2 of this three children and Mary's brother James Bryce and family.

John and family were on their way from Scotland to Australia

I tried for several year to find his eldest child Jean Ann Campbell(known as Jane) born in Malta, who was missing from that census...
I have now finally found her in 1851 staying in the house of Alexander Niven and his wife Christina and children....
Jane states she is a 'niece"... Christina Niven born knapdale was the daugher of Donald Campbell Carter of Brackely and Margaret Walker ...
This is where I am confused..... :?: :?: One would think that for Jane to be the niece of Christina, then Christina would be John's sister, but I cannot find that they have common parents...

Out of nine children from two marriages (one in Gibraltar to Jean and the second to Mary Bryce in Barony) , John Campbell did not call any of his six sons Donald..or any of his 3 daughters Margaret....but he did name his second daughter Christina...

Can anyone please suggest some ideas to me...
Thanks for the ear... :)

Hi Gay
and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

Just thinking about possible sources of more information on your man and it seems the Chelsea pensioner records should soon be online.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/stories/212.htm
Perhpas that may be of some help when they appear.
only one Census 1851..where he was in Manchester Lancs ho107/2224 with his second wife Mary and 2 of this three children and Mary's brother James Bryce and family.
So is place of birth just stated as "Scotland"?
have now finally found her in 1851 staying in the house of Alexander Niven and his wife Christina and children....
In Scotland? Where are they living?
Out of nine children from two marriages (one in Gibraltar to Jean and the second to Mary Bryce in Barony)
What year? Is it pre-1855? If after 1855 parents names should be given on the marriage entry.

Best wishes
Lesley

Yes I already have John's WO97 Chelsea Pensioner Records through LDS here in Oz..and through the Army Chaplains Records for Stations Abroad microfiche I ordered the certificates for his marriage in Gibraltar, to Ann McCann in 1832..birth f Jean Ann in Malta in 1833, birth of John in Portsmouth 1838 and birth of Christina in Bermdua in 1842
.
John was discharged in Nova Scotia in 1846 and returned to Scotland without his wife, but with his 3 children....In 1847 he was married to Mary Bryce by Rev Ross of St Marks free protesting congregation pf Barony.
only one Census 1851..where he was in Manchester Lancs ho107/2224 with his second wife Mary and 2 of this three children and Mary's brother James Bryce and family.

Yes in the Census the place of birth was Scotland for both John and Mary, Portsmouth of John Jnr and Bermuda for Christina and simply Scotland for the Bryce Family..
have now finally found her in 1851 staying in the house of Alexander Niven and his wife Christina and children....
In Scotland? Where are they living?
Yes the Nivens were living at 54 Eglinton St Gorbals..
Christina Niven died sometime after the 1851 census and before 1853 when her husband remarried and took his wife back to the same address.
Out of nine children from two marriages (one in Gibraltar to Jean and the second to Mary Bryce in Barony)

The marriage was pre 1855, so I have only banns which give naems and place of marriage.. :(

Everywhere I turn the events are too early for civil registration..and to find the names of parents..

John and Mary with all three children plus a 1 month old newborn who died on the voyage, , embarked on the Convict Ship Minden to Australia on 12 July 1851...where I have been able to trace him locally.

Thanks and Cheers

Do you know anything about the family of Jane's mother? I'm a bit confused about her... I must be missing something.

So Jane's mother was named Jean?
gayze wrote:I ordered the certificates for his marriage in Gibraltar, to Ann McCann in 1832.
So Jane's mother was Ann McCann?

Sorry, I'm probably being dense here... but I was trying to work out how Jane could be the niece of Alexander Niven (or Archibald? He appears as Archibald in the 1851 Ancestry transcription) through her mother. Any way Jane's mother could have been a sibling or half-sibling to either of the Nivens?

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Gay

Can I ask another question - where where does Christina Campbell's parents' information come from ?
I noticed that in 1841 at 54 Eglinton Street , Gorbals there is a Christina Campbell aged 25 , a cot sewer , along with a Margaret Campbell aged 20, a cot sewer. The Ancestry transcription has them both born in Lanarkshire .
