Scottish Naming Pattern

Post by rubeaz » Sat Apr 04, 2009 9:47 am

:D I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on my grandmothers name
Elizabeth Duke Robertson Campbell
Does Duke or Robertson as middle names mean anything :?:
Even more confusing she married a Macgregor so her name got longer and longer :!:
Thanks

There is a strong chance that these are surnames from a previous generation. Do you know the surnames of her parents, grandparents and beyond?

All the best,

Hello Rubeaz,

This site can sometimes prove useful when it comes to Scottish middle names.

Yes, the link Currie gave is a wonderful resource!

It just sped up me finding someone I was looking for as 'proof' that my great-grandfather stunk  at remembering names. He messed up his mother's name when he had to list her on his marriage record, so I was willing to believe he got his adoptive father's father's name wrong on his adoptive father's death record, but finding a brother's son named for the likely great-grandfather makes it easier to like I've proved it.

Details at this blog post; I'll be posting a follow-up with the details soon.
McGee (Donegal to Edinburgh), Jamieson/Guthrie (Leith), Keddie (Peebles, Galashiels), Little (Cavers, Traquair), Arthur (Galashiels) , Paterson (Edinburgh, with occ. spells in Stirling, Greenock, Leith), Ralston (Glasgow to Stirling), Greig (Elgin)
