The NZEF 1914-18
Hey,
Are there any military experts out there who know anything about the NZEF in WW1?
I've done the usual google searches and found some useful information, but I know Google is only as good as the keyword you search for - and being a pacifist and a complete girly about all things military, I'm pretty sure I'm missing all sorts.
Can anyone give me a few less obvious leads?
Thanks
Ann

Hello Ann,
I’m not a Military expert but I’ll have a go.
NZ WW1 files are now with Archives New Zealand and it looks like there’s now a charge of NZ$25.00 (UK£9.60), presumably for the whole file. I think it was free when they were with NZDF. http://www.archives.govt.nz/researching ... lfiles.php
I think you’ve seen the Cenotaph database. There’s also this one but no use to you yet as it’s still under construction. http://deepthought.hass.adfa.edu.au:8088/index.html
If you’re researching New Zealand Army activities during the Great War think ANZAC. See the Wiki and specific NZ links. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZAC
Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi Alan,
Yep, it does. As you may have guessed, this is in relation to Walter, whom you've already helped me find
. I've managed to order his Will/probate record and service record from the archive you suggested; I'm still waiting for them to arrive - there seems to be a wait of about 4-5 weeks at the moment because of a backlog.
But I'll go and take a look at those other links too now, thanks. And thanks for the ANZAC tip. I'd heard about the ANZACs, obviously - who hasn't - but I wasn't sure if I'd find anything related to the NZEF specifically in such records. Of course, now you've said it, searching amongst them makes total sense!
Thanks - again!
Regards,
Ann

Ann,
If you have any questions regarding the NZEF, you could do worse than ask The Great War Forum.

Well, it's been a week since I signed up to the Great War Forum as Roxy suggested. Still not in. It's a great site, full of useful information and leads to follow. I can get in, look around, read all the posts, go to all the links.... But I can't post anything. I even resorted to emailing them midweek - still heard nothing back. Eventually reregistered yesterday. But still can't start a thread, or reply to any. Don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Is anyone else a member there?
Regards,
Ann

Hi Ann
It says on their site:
Best wishes
Lesley
It is years since I joined up there, but as far as I remember they operate in a similar way to TS, in that every member who applies to join has to be manually accepted (this stops all the porn and "pharmaceutical" merchants) so perhaps a few of their admin are away for the week?? I seem to remember I had to send an email to them to ask - certainly worth a shot and it proves you are a "real person" too.Is anyone else a member there?
It says on their site:
I've just registered....Why can't I post a message?, Please read if this is you
Our registration process is in two steps.
First, you apply as a member and have to acknowledge a validation email that you are sent. (This is to ensure that you have a working email address. It filters out many automated spammers, too). Sometimes this email is directed to a spam filter by your ISP. Please check your spam folders if the email appears not to have arrived.
Second, your registration is personally approved by the Moderators. This generally catches the human spammers and keeps our Forum clean. We must have stopped thousands pornographers, viagra salesmen, bank phishers and the like by using this method.
This means there is a delay between you acknowledging the email and being able to post. The delay is sometimes only a few minutes but sometimes can be several hours depending on the time of day and the availablility of the Moderators to do the checking. We apologise for this but we are sure you will understand and once you use the Forum regularly will appreciate that keeping out the undesirables is worth the wait.
Best wishes
Lesley
