WW1 Medal Roll entry found, but can't find Service Record

Post by Alien » Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:21 pm

I have found what I think is my grandfather 'George H. Orr's' Medal Roll card on Ancestry's free military records, but I cannot find an entry for his Service Record. When I type in the name 'Orr' it is throwing up names of people who have a second name e.g. Smith or Jones. It is picking up the name 'Orr' as an alternative instead of a name in it's own right.

There does not seem to be any Service Record for anyone called George Orr which is strange as it must be a common name.

He lived in Caltron, Glasgow, Lanarkshire was a plumber and his date of birth was 1 Jan 1879.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Alien,

Did your grandfather survive the war?

There is this record:

George Orr
Residence: Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Death Date: 15 Apr 1917
Rank: Private
Regiment: Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, the Duke of Albany's)
Battalion: 9th Battalion.
Number: S/8902
Type of Casualty: Killed in action
Theater of War: Aldershot

If this isn't him, give us as many details of his service as possible and some of us will have a look!

Carol :D
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Hi Alien
As far as I remember the service records on Ancestry go up to letter N. There are some surnames from later in the alphabet than N currently online but only because they had been filed out of sequene.
See
http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?ht ... 3a7858%3a0
With the latest release, this database now contains records for surnames beginning A-N. Full surname range coverage will be realised with future releases. Names falling outside of this range that are presently included in the database come from records that were misfiled according to surname sequence.
but remember that:
In 1940 there was a World War Two bombing raid on the War Office in London where the records were held. During this raid, a large portion (approximately 60 per cent) of the 6.5 million records was destroyed by fire. The surviving service records have become known as the ‘Burnt Documents’.
Best wishes
Lesley (who has been waiting for letter S for some time now... )

Hi Carol and Lesley,
Thank you very much indeed for taking the time to reply. Yes, he did survive the war, but I don't know anything about his war history.

I think you might have solved the problem of why I haven't been able to find the name 'Orr' Lesley, if the records are only going as far as the letter 'N'.
