Hi,
Can someone with local knowledge please help?
I have just received a 1749 marriage extract from the OPR from the parish of Caputh in Perthshire.
I was hoping it would say if one or both of the parties was a widow(er), but it doesn't. So I really need to decipher where they're both from.
The groom, Charles Bissat, is from what looks like 'Damind of Fordy' and the bride, Euphan Scott, from Haukhill. I can't find either on multimap and I've also tried googling them , without any success.
Help!

hello Jill,
have a look at :
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... _list.html
Pick Sheet 48 , and Caputh Parish is the yellow one away up at the very top on the left.
There's a Mains and a Whins of Fordie to the North West of Caputh it'self.
That Map is a late 1890's though.
I can't see anything straight away for Haukhill.
AndrewP. is our 'map man', he'll know doubt be able to shed more light on the situation.

No obvious candidates for Haukhill. Does the extract (presumably from the OPR) say that Haukhill is "in the parish"? If not, does it give any other parish name? The nearest ones that I can see in Caputh Parish are Haughend (at the NW corner of the parish - almost at Dunkeld), and Culthill, almost next door to Mains of Fordie. Neither of them is a convincing match for Haukhill.
All the best,

When out this afternoon, I went grazing in the map section of a local stationers/bookshop. I found a map of 1:25000 of the Dunkeld-Blairgowrie area. A quick study of that showed up a Hawkhill in the adjacent parish of Clunie.
To see this one online, go to the Ordnance Survey Get a Map website at http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ and first of all agree to their terms at the bottom of that page. In the Get a Map page that shows next, search for NO110431 (second character is letter O, fifth character is "zero"). Hawkhill is near the top right of that map. You will need to zoom out to find Caputh village about 3 miles SW of there. Mains of Fordie is on a straight line between them, about a mile NE of Caputh.

www.streetmap.co.uk offers 5 different Hawkhills in Scotland. None of them being either Dundee, or the one on Perthshire that I offered (suffice it to say there are many more in Scotland). I see no reason to say that the one in Dundee is any more likely that the Perthshire on, or indeed any of the others.
All the best,

Thanks to everyone who replied - especially Andrew, what a great website. The Hawkhill and Mains of Fordie you found near Caputh are obviously the right ones.
Just got to prove it's the same lady who married in Rhynd ( don't worry, I know where that is!) 22 years earlier.
Thanks again
Jill
