I have not got much information at all but maybe someone with experience may be able to help me.
My ancestor Margaret Hunt nee ELLIOT died 1874 aged 70 years in Lanarkshire. Parents listed as James Elliot (shoemaker) and Catherine Elliot nee Reilly (both dec).
Trying to find them on a census without much luck. Margaret their daughter was born in Ireland about 1804.
The other information on the DC of Margaret's is 1st marriage to William Hamilton (soldier). 2nd marriage to Thomas Hunt.
The only IGI I have been able to find lists a Margaret Elliot and William Hamilton marriage in 1857 which is not mine!
Any ideas or help would be great.

I downloaded Margaret Hunts dc to see if it may hold any other clues on your family, I noticed the informant was her Son William Hamilton, had a look for births on William and there are lots & lots, far to many without some sort of idea on his birth year.

Then looked for the death of Thomas Hunt as both husbands had died before her, whilst looking one caught my eye and it was the Son of Thomas Hunt 'Chelsea Pensioner" and Margaret nee Elliot, age 5.

1856 Deaths District of Tradestown in the Burgh of Glasgow.
Hunt, Thomas Henry (single) 1856 December twentieth 24 Eglesos Lane Glasgow.
Male age 5 Thomas Hunt Chelsea Pensioner, Margaret Hunt ms Elliot.
Bronchitis 2 weeks as certified by David Tindall surgeon who saw deceased Dec 13.
Thomas Hunt Father present, registered 22 Dec at Glasgow,.

The thing is I have not been able to find his birth 1850-1852 on the OPR's, so hopefully one of the mods will come along and see what I am missing.

Hi Rubeaz,

There's a good good possible marriage for William Hamilton (age 25) to Margaret Kelly in Govan in 1864. His father is given as William Hamilton, private soldier in the 44th Foot (deceased). The mother is given (wrongly?) as Margaret Hamilton, M.S. Hunt. The marriage took place in the Roman Catholic Chapel in Govan.

If the family were Roman Catholic, that probably explains the absence of the baptisms and marriages from the OPRs. If you want to find pre-1855 baptismal or marriage records for this family, you would probably have to seek the records of the Roman Catholic churches, starting with the areas of Glasgow, south of the river. Unfortunately the Roman Catholic church records are not to be found online yet.

A parent search on the online IGI shows these children to a William Hamilton and Margaret Kelly couple.

Gulielmus Hamilton - Christening: 13 JUN 1869 St Bede, Jarrow, Durham, England

Georgius Hamilton - Christening: 25 JUN 1884 St Bede'S, Jarrow, Durham, England
Franciscus Joannes Hamilton - Christening: 21 AUG 1889 St Bede'S, Jarrow, Durham, England

The first one should be for the right couple of these names. The ones in Jarrow may be worth following up to see if they are the same family.

Andrew, I was interested in William Hamilton' father. Where would be the best place to start looking for Military Records. Not sure what 44th Foot means

The IGI list of births was interesting as on his Mother's dc under the name of William Hamilton Son informant was something I couldn't quite make out *ri*pool Hull. I don't think Durham & Hull are to far apart ?

This is maybe where he and the family where living at the time. So Rubeaz you may find them on the England census.
