McVicars in Inverary/Cumlodden Parishes

Post by David Lang » Mon May 18, 2009 3:11 pm

I have gone back to a line which is distantly related to my Lang's the other day and realised i had taken down an age wrong from a census and have managed to get the wrong parents and thus had to start again

Hit a bit of problem finding disappearing and reappearing McVicars in Inverary and Cumlodden Parishes.

Starting point is Jane McVicar born in 1846 in Inverary , i have her MC and DC, she married Alexander Lang or Loynachan (my relative).

She is the youngest of 8 children born to Niven McVicar and Catherine McPhail.

1841 Census- the family are at Achantibart (??) Inveraray without Niven,
Catherine (35), Barbara (11) , Nelly(9), Catherine(6) , Margaret (1)

I have 2 other children Jean (1836) and Mary (1837) from OPRs who dont appear and i have assumned are dead. Nelly would be the Helen born 1831 from the OPRs.

1851 census at Achantibart (??) Inveraray Parish, Niven along with Catherine (wife), Margaret (11 ) , Mary (8) and Jane(5) . The Mary here is the second Mary born 1842.

Niven dies in 1858 in Cumlodden Parish

1861 The family are in Relief Land, Inveraray Catherine, Margaret (18) , Jane (15) are with her.

1871- No sign of the family,

1872- Jane is married and her address is listed as Crosslet House, Dumbarton as a domestic servant

IN 1881 I have Catherine in Relief Close, Inverary along with Ellen (48) , could this be Helen/Nelly from 1841 Census as daughter and Grandson Donald McCallum (16) born in Glencoe

Can anyone find the missing people on the Census and also Donald McCallum's birth ?

Thanks in advance

I'll start with the easy one.

Jane is at Crosslet House in 1871. :D

The most obvious birth for Donald would be to Angus McCallum and Catherine McVicar who married at Inverary in 1858 but at the moment I can't find the family on any census.

Still looking...............but I'm sure there will be input from others soon.

Annette

Found them at Ardchattan where their 3rd child was born.

Angus McCallum 36
Catherine McCallum 37
Nevin McCallum 13
Donald McCallum 6
Catherine McCallum 68 mother in law :?

I can only think this is Catherine senior either wrongly transcribed or just a mistake. She's certainly the right age and is born at Inverary.

Annette

Thanks Annette

I has Donald pegged for the daughter Ellen, purely because he was with her and his grandmother in the census

Marriage entry confirms the Catherine McVicar to be the son of Niven and Catherine, question is where was she in 1851, another problem solved only to be presented with another problem!!!! How i love genealogy

I thought Jane would be in Dumbarton , with her MC stating her address a year after as that

Thanks again
