message "No Image" and Message Boards

Post by dbr87185 » Sat May 23, 2009 3:04 pm

Hi All

New to this. Two questions:

When searching ScotlandsPeople data-base I sometimes get a result that says "No image". I realise this means that I can't bring up a picture of a particular record. If this is the case, what can they show me if I "Order an Image"?- and why the difference?

Secondly, how do I join a message board with a focus on a particular family; or in my case families.

Thankyou from Sunny Perth in Western Australia.

Don

Hi Don,

Welcome to TalkingScot. [scotland-flag]

On ScotlandsPeople, there are two reasons that I can think of for the no image scenario.
  1. The result is too recent -
    • within the last 100 years for a birth
    • within the last 75 years for a marriage
    • within the last 50 years for a death
If you want one of these recent ones you have to send away to ScotlandsPeople or GROS and it will be an official extract from the register that you receive.
  2. The result is before the 100/75/50 years mentioned above, but the original scanned image is considered to be of too poor quality, it is not available online. This is the case for a lot of the no image ones from the 1851 census. These are to be replaced at some time with new images. The original problem with these is that they were written on blue paper and depending on the ink used there was not enough contrast difference between the paper colour and the ink colour for when these were first scanned onto microfilm creating black and white images. A different imaging process has been used for the new images, but they are not yet available online.
All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Don
...and welcome to Talking Scot :D
Secondly, how do I join a message board with a focus on a particular family; or in my case families.
There are many message boards on the web which focus on family names e.g. Rootsweb at http://boards.rootsweb.com/, Genforum at http://genforum.genealogy.com/surnames/ and each one probably works in a slightly different way, so you'd need to look at the instructions on each web site if you were not sure how it worked. We do not have an area of the Talking Scot forum which lists surname interests in that way.

Here on Talking Scot we have two areas for "help" - the TS PowerPoint Presentation (link at top of page) which gives a good overview of what TS is about, and for members we have the "How to..." section to help you get to grips with the workings of the forum and settle in quickly.

Hi Don:

Although we don't have the kind of area you have described, you can incorporate some people/places of interest in your signature by editing your Profile. Click on the blue Profile button in the page header.

Scroll down until you see the caption Signature: along the left side of the page. Next to it, is a white box in which you can add your names/places/quotes, etc. (There is a limit of 255 characters that will show on screen.) Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Submit. As you solve your mysteries you are able to go back in and change it, as necessary.

All the best,

Thank you for your prompt and helpful response.

When I update my profile I will indicate my family interest in the following:

The Browns and Kellys of Kilbirnie, Ayrshire; the Kellys and Dicksons of Lanarkshire, the Knox and Wards of Midlothian, and the Wards of Orkney.

Thank you once again.
