Capetown 1922

Does anyone know which British [incl Irish ] regiments were in South Africa especially Capetown in Jan 1922?? Also how I would look up a death of William Howe of Fermanagh NI?

I'm not clear from your question if William Howe died in military action or in Fermanagh and so is a separate question?

On the assumption this is a separate question, and your man died IN Fermanagh when did he die (roughly)? If after 1863 you can look at the Irish indexes on the Family Search Pilot site. www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

You can then order a copy of the death entry. Again dates matter for this - if before 1922, you need to contact GRO.ie at Roscommon. If after 1922 it will be The General Register Office in Belfast as Fermanagh is in NI.

However, if he died in Capetown, it may be that none of the above will apply.

Thanks for the reply. Allow to elaborate. William Howe is my great GF and he is listed, in memory, on the family gravestone,which is located in Maguiresbridge Fermanagh, as being killed in Capetown Jan 1922??
Therefore as there is no mention of seafaring in the family I jumped next to the military? Perhaps the Enniskillen Fusiliers were stationed in South Africa during that period?

If he was in the 'Skins' then you should try thier museum in Enniskillen.

Thanks for the explanation; I understand now! Bit of a mystery that, then. Not sure where you are based, but any chance of getting hold of any local newspapers, "The Impartial Reporter" or the "Fermanagh Herald", possibly both around at the time? I think there may also have been a "Fermanagh Times". Would not be surprised if there was some mention of his death in the newspapers one way or another. He may also have been at Capetown for other reasons; perhaps he had gone there on business, or to live there?

I wonder if it would be worth contacting the library at Enniskillen? They have a family and local history section there, and the staff there are very helpful. If I think of anything else I'll be back!

As far as I'm aware no British troops were stationed in South Africa after 1921.

To be honest he could have been killed by anything. It could have been a disease or accident or even murder...
